The play centers around a typical family in St. Louis around the turn of the century. Mr. Smith has just been transferred to a New York firm. Rose, the eldest of four daughters is determined not to move, especially when Lucille Pentard arrives and entrances all the local boys, including John Shepard. The story does have a happy ending, however, when Mr. Dodge rehires Mr. Smith and raises his salary, too. The family does not have to move and even though it is the opening of the World's Fair, Grandpa continues his daydreams of previous royalty. We Threw Away Culture for Sadie Hawkins Pandemonium reigned the night of November 21st, when the Panther Den was haunted by pig-tailed, frecklefaced, desperate bachelor gals and raggedy-clad, side-burned, eligible men. Marryin1 Sam --better known as Jerry Robison--imparted his final instructions and deepest sympathy before the minute hand of the clock reached 8:30. Then panic stricken males made a headlong dash for the hills with the man-crazed females not far behind them. Some were roped and hog-tied; some were dragged; others came peacefully across the finishing line where Marryin' Sam met them with a smile, a marriage license, and a short civil ceremony--all for a modest fee. However, the spirit-broken captives soon lost their downcast attitudes as they purchased their kissing licenses and spend the rest of the evening . . . w-e-1-1- . . .
