ELSTOH: A CLASSIC HIGH SCHOOL ti? I,- Elston High School as pictured in 1930. In 1869 the city high school, located where Elston now stands was constructed. You may think your class is small compared to another but three 1989 girIs-Mary Behan, Alice Brett and Sarah ELSTON HIGH Farrar once composed an entire graduating class. Today it is obvious ELSTOHIAN many more people value an education. SCHOOL The facilities are also much better. The first class to graduate from Michigan City was in 1871. Classes have graduated ever since with the exception of 1874 and 1885. The old high school was used until 1876 when a new school,CEHTRAL SCHOOL was built. An increase made this move a necessity. In 1896 fire damaged the Central building and ,4 classes were held in Barker Hall and ' ' ' W other buildings in town until the school MlChlgan Clty could be reconstructed. Soon Central 0 W School became overcrowed and another Ifldlana V01. 69 school was built. Isaac Compton Elston donated the land for this school. In 1910 Elston School was completed. This building was located where the present theatre complex stands today. The ever increasing population of Michigan City made it necessary to build again. The present Elston High School building was constructed in 1924. The first graduating class was in 1926. In this school the Robert Grafton mural first appeared in the third floor study hall. Painted by Mr. Grafton of Michigan City, it showed an early history of the area. As 120 years ago, the students of Elston High School learn the ideals of a proper education. It is the hope of the 1988-89 ELSTOHIAH that the classics shown in this years :- book will preserve the memory of a great school.
