. W I mug. -- .g: a? .0090 m ...wo....n III! ELSTOH: A CLASSIC HIGH SCHOOL ti? I,- Elston High School as pictured in 1930. In 1869 the city high school, located where Elston now stands was constructed. You may think your class is small compared to another but three 1989 girIs-Mary Behan, Alice Brett and Sarah ELSTON HIGH Farrar once composed an entire graduating class. Today it is obvious ELSTOHIAN many more people value an education. SCHOOL The facilities are also much better. The first class to graduate from Michigan City was in 1871. Classes have graduated ever since with the exception of 1874 and 1885. The old high school was used until 1876 when a new school,CEHTRAL SCHOOL was built. An increase made this move a necessity. In 1896 fire damaged the Central building and ,4 classes were held in Barker Hall and ' ' ' W other buildings in town until the school MlChlgan Clty could be reconstructed. Soon Central 0 W School became overcrowed and another Ifldlana V01. 69 school was built. Isaac Compton Elston donated the land for this school. In 1910 Elston School was completed. This building was located where the present theatre complex stands today. The ever increasing population of Michigan City made it necessary to build again. The present Elston High School building was constructed in 1924. The first graduating class was in 1926. In this school the Robert Grafton mural first appeared in the third floor study hall. Painted by Mr. Grafton of Michigan City, it showed an early history of the area. As 120 years ago, the students of Elston High School learn the ideals of a proper education. It is the hope of the 1988-89 ELSTOHIAH that the classics shown in this years :- book will preserve the memory of a great school. W5 mews? 572sz gags Do you ever wonder what happens to the Ime letters and notes that you casually drop or toss on the floors of the Elston High? What about the candy bar wrappers and pop cans, who cleans those up? By now if the halls were never cleaned up, we would be walking through Snickers wrappers and Diet Coke cans every day. Can you imagine your mom picking up after 1200 kids? Vrobably not, it's not your mom but our small and efficient army of maintenante people. They're the ones that keep the air conditioning running when it is 100 degrees outside I plus many other jobs that go unnoticed. The secretaries take care of attendance, book fees, ballons, and roses delivered to the school, important letters, office messages, mail, and college transcripts. Have you ever wondered who makes the jalopaneo peppers, hogie sandwitches, taco salads, tator tots, and fruit cups? Who slaves over hot stoves and ovens all morning long? No, not your mom, but the cafeteria ladies. They cook and clean up after the feeding of 250 people. ' These are all the behind the seens people at Elston, the maintance people, cafeteria ladies, and secretaries who fulfill very importantjobs for a very large amount of people. - 4 : y ' -d 'r John Grams, Carol Dombrowski, Marietta Waldon, and Dave Hapke Left; Shirley Aigner, Carole Belly Barbara McCune, Harriet Wright, Cyndee Windle, and Daisy Helmken. 7215 642-235 07 735 P245 7 U Do you remember the days of Warren Jones meloww Those were the days of cheering crowds mbovm and a spirit-mled Elston. It General Harwood Biddle Marc Pelath was set in New York in 1946. As you may already know John really does love Mary. John's buddy Fred saved his life during the war. This made John feel in debt to him. He went overseas and found his old girlfriend, Lily. John married Lily, to bring her into the United States so that she and Fred could be together. Little did John know that Fred was married and soon to be a father. To make things more difficult Mary's parents are pressing for her and John to get married. All this happened before he could get the marriage to Lily annuled so that he wouldn't have to explain to Mary. Although John and Mary did not wed after the truth came out, they still love each other very much. John now knows that its better to tell the . . , . ,, truth than to tell a lie. i ' .3. A CLASSIC TEST There were several math classes held at Elston last year. Each student had thier choice of one of these, although only two math classes were required to graduate. Students could take three or four classes of math consisting of one per year. Some of the math classes were able to use the computers that were in the math department. These computers were used to helpthe students further thier education in computer programming and statistics. Some of the math classes offered were General Math, Informal Algebra, Algebra I and II, Algebra Trigonometry, Basic Geometry, and Geometry. Inflation rises. Add it up--it's cheaper! Illustrating Math Problems MATH CLUB PROBLEM: What is it? ANSWER: Math club is a group of students who meet to practice for math contests. They compete in about nine contests per year. Some are local and some are as far as Purdue Calument. The only requirments are that students need to be in Algebra I or above Most contests have an unlimited number of participants and anyone interested can go to the meets. The problems range from Algebra I through Calculus. The Math, Business and I Ilnary departments had mrnputers that the students t ould use for their assignments. Almost all of the major businesses are going to romputers for the use of filing and such. It is important that the students learn how to use computers. Some of the Classes that were offered at Elston were: Computers, Data Processing, Accounting l 8r ll, Math 8x Electronics. The main offices also used computers last year. Computers are becoming a term of the century and a way of the future. Jenifer Hardacker uses Math Computers Since computers are becoming the way of the future. Elston decided to start a Computer Club that would not only be educational, but would also be fun at the same time. You did not have to be a Computer-data Processing student to join Computer Club. There were several classes that have advanced in technology so that the students would have better understanding of Computers. Student concentrates on special problems. In the one-hour classes the new curriculum has introduced computer applications to the work place, teaching how a computer can aid man in the production of goods and services In the three-hour classes they greatly expanded the Power Mechanics program. Greater emphasis was put into Marine Technology Also to be included in the curriculum will be topics that will help students to develop job seeking skills. The great part about the Mock trials is that the students really do something different than the same daily schedule that they have been doing for so many years. Students find out all that goes into putting on a trial, the work by lawyers, witnesses, and judges. By taping the Mock Trial' students get to see the outcome of their work. This program allows Elston students who are planning on going into teaching to get hands on training. Our young teachers go to area schools for a couple hours a day where they get a chance to prepare themselves for a future in teaching. The program has very few members, but is very effective. Morning teachers include Vicki Kreag iMarsh Schooli, Anne McDaniels iEdgewood Schooli, 8r Lavila Richardson iEastport Schooli.
