1986 Boys Golf Team, 2nd In State The 1985-86 boys golf team finished an outstanding season by finishing as the state tournament runner-up to defending champion Kokomo. Played at Old Oakland golf course near Indianapolis, the tournament is a two day event with scores counting from both days to determine the winner. After the first day, the Devils were down 10 strokes and in third place. The second day was rainy and very cold, but the guys fought hard and played well under the conditions and moved up another place to finish in second. The team, coached by Max Croft, had an unblemished 20-0 record during the regular season. A 9-0 record in the NIC conference earned them the conference crown. In pre-state tournament action, the team finished second in the sectional and won the regional with a record 298. the team consisted of Dave Cunningham. Todd Ash, Rich Butler, Brian McBride, and Jeff Kerestury. 1986 graduate David Cunningham completed an excellent high school career by winning the individual golf state championship. David shot rounds of 70-72 to finish at 142, beating Jeff Owsley of Kokoma by 5 strokes for individual title. Cunningham’s score was the lowest by anyone at the state tournament since 1970. His first round of 2-under par 70 was only 1 stroke off the lead. David played extremely well the following day under the cold, wet conditions posting and even-par 72 to run away with the title. His previous three state tournament appearances definitely helped him handle the pressure of the large galleries following his group around the course. For his accomplishments, David received a medal. and honor blanket, and a ring from the booster club. Boys Golf 12

Elston Wins Prestigious N.I.C. All Sports Trophy The 1985-86 athletic teams helped Elston win its first ever Northern Indiana Conference All-Sports Trophy. Points are awarded all through the year based on standings at the end of the year. At the end of last year, Elston teams had the most points heating Penn high school who had won the trophy the previous year. The effort was aided by conference championships in Boy’s Basketball, Boy’s Golf, and co-champs with Elkhart Memorial in Boy’s Cross Country. Our teams were in 6th place after the full season. A strong winter season helped the cause with no team finishing worse than 4th out of the 10 NIC schools, putting Elston in 2nd place. A strong spring season enabled the athletes to bring to Elston it’s first ever all-conference sports trophy. Left: Mr. Bietry proudly poses with the Northern Indiana Conference all-sport trophy. Below: Tom Osborne with Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Zeek after receiving the Zeek memorial award. Zeek Memorial Award Senior Tom Osborne was the winner of the doe Zeek memorial award. The award, given in memory of former lineman Joe Zeek, is presented annually to the most outstanding lineman on either Michigan City football team. The award is sponsored by the Michigan City News-Dispatch. Tom proved to be deserving of the award by his many season accomplishments. He was named to the NIC all-conference team and the all-area team. Tom was named most versatile for the News-Dispatch area and was named to the South Bend all-area team. Finally, Tom was named as the team’s Most Valuable Player for offense.
