During the year, Michigan City and Elston High School were home for six foreign exchange student . They stayed with families in Michigan City and lived an American teen’s life for a year. Some of them stayed with families that had a son or daughter going to Elston. For most, it was their first chance to experience a winter snowfall. The shock came when they realized how cold it had to be to snow. The winter, however, was a mild one and we didn’t get as much snow as usual. There was some very cold weather though, and this was one major dislike of the student . Ricardo Llorente from Bogota, Colombia said the parties were much wilder here and he liked the American girls and music very much. Dan Molestad from Norway also liked the girls and music and thought school was easier here, but couldn’t figure out how the computers worked. Pictured below from left to right are Pei-Hu from the Phillipines, Dan Molestad-Norway, Ana Mandujano- Mexico, Anna Betriu- Spain, Ricardo Llorente- Colombia, and Manuel Diaz from Spain. City Leaves Many Memories Michigan City was a one of a kind town for each of us. For many it was spending long summer days on the beach with friends. Our deep tans soon faded away with fall and we were back in school. After school, most of us were involved in either activities, sports, or after school jobs. After basketball games, we usually went to McDonalds or Burger King for burger and to socialize. On weekends many flocked to the theaters to see a movie. Others went to parties and gathered with friends. Spring rolled around again and people can be seen enjoying outdoor activities again. The spring sports teams can be seen fighting the April showers. The town unthaws and everyone gets anxious for the summer ahead. Finally, the summer comes again. T-tops disappear, sunroofs open, windows come down. Students, enjoying their 3 month vacation, can be seen all over town. Whether it was day at the zoo, a walk in Washington Park, or just laying out at the beach, we can never forget our days in Michigan City. Top: Dunes Plaza Cinema, a popular weekend attraction. Homecoming After the clubs and sponsoring teachers discussed the idea very thoroughly, they decided not to have the traditional homecoming parade with the decorated floats. This year, the candidates walked with their escorts to their decorated reserved section in front of the Red Devil fans. Before our homecoming game, there was a main storm which made the field very muddy. The muddy field made it difficult for the finalists to make their final round so everyone could see them. LaSalle lead the fighting Red Devils at the close of halftime 6-0. After waiting through all of the excitement, the thrilling moment finally came. Sharonne Cash was crowned the 1986 Homecoming Queen. Cindy Miller, returning queen from last year, announced the lucky homecoming queen. The Elston Red Devil football team played a great game. In overtime the Devils were victorious over LaSalle 20-14. This victory brought about a celebration at the homecoming dance after the game where many Red Devil fans talked about all the excitement and celebrated Homecoming. Homecoming brought many alumni back to cheer on the fighting Red Devils. Homecoming 8
