Alice Brett. and Sarah Farrar received their diplomas after com- pleting a three year course in high school. The first High School in Michigan City, Fourth Street School. was located on the corner of Fourth and Pine Street and erect- ed in 1869. This building was used until 1876 when the number of students had in- creased so greatly that a new school had to be built. It was in this year. 1876. that Central School was built Central School was short lived though. In 1869 the building was seri- ously damaged by fire and the classes of the school were moved and held in Barker Hall and various other places through out the city until the school could be recon- structed. However. the building soon became inad- equate. and Isaac C, Elston High School tthe former Jr. Higm was built at Detroit and Spring Streets in 1909. Again. enroll- ment became too large. and the present Isaac C. Elston senior High School was con- structed in 1924. Classes were opened in 1925 and the 59th class to graduate from it. the Class of '84. entered in 1980. Most schools around Indiana prowde a club like this, but at lS stlll conSIdered to be a local organization. The mat malds were furst started to en- able the wrestlers to have their own cheer- mg section. Mat maids went to all of the meets and gave the wrestlers the support and encouragement that they deserved and needed. The team really appreCIated all of their devotion. These girls had other responsubllltles bee s:des cheermg on the team. Before each home meet they had to put the mats on the floor. and clean and tape them together. Then they put the raullng up on the edges of the bleachers. and they put out tables and foldung chanrs for the timers and score keepers. They also had to clean up the gym alter the meets. They also rolled the mats back up and put everything away. Thus helped the wrestlers so they dudn't have to put things away whnle they were tired. They did this by inviting any- one who was interested in the direction of the class to come to Steering Committee meetings. They also showed much enthusi- asm at the pep sessions. The Freshmen class will face many chal- lenges in the years ahead. One of the har- dest challenges the Freshmen had was adapting to high school life. For some it was an easy transition. for others it took weeks just to find the central offices.
