You can touch a portrait. Yet the thoughts and memories it conveys are intangible. These memories can be bad as well as good. but still, when they are pondered upon. they can bring a feeling of fulfillment to YOU. School spirit is much the same. AlthOugh it is an abstract idea. it can be so much more. You can hide away your spirit and ruin the pow- er of rivaIry not only for yourself. but for others, or y0u can reach down and pull out the excitement that will let you give it everything you have and walk out feeling bet- ter than you ever knew you could. In it's most competitive state. Dev- il Spirit can stimulate you to a ponnt where you can almost reach I WSHII Life out and touch the tension filling the air. Two familiar people who are do- ing a great job of helping us share and show our spirit this year are Kevin Martin and Allyson Forsythe. President and Viee-President of our Student Council. If they see a. single person hiding away their emotions to be cool they'll try anything from entering that person in a pie-eating contest or asking someone ot the opposite sex to help them get dressed while blind- folded. By the end of one of these assignments, how could the person not be as enthused as the rest of us? Another favorite skit transpired when we managed to get the class sponsors down on the floor in a baby bottle-sucking contest. The gym went wild while taunts and catcalls were hurled at the teach- .ers busily consuming the orange KooI-Aid from their bottles. Do we even remember who won? Of course not- we were just sorry the hilarious sight was over. The upper classmen have been doing a good job of showing the newcomers how to act crazy. There are two clubs that are espe- cially great for those who want to get involved. Mr. Freitag heads the boys cheerblock. and encour- ages the boys to stir up as much devilish disorder as they can. Along with the cheerleaders. Miss Smidt organizes the girls cheer'- block. more commonly known as RT. No matter what the score. you can be sure these members will be up and inspiring our team with the most enthusiastic cheers they can muster. This year a final runs in our climb to freedom of spirit was the devel- opment of a new school constitu- tion. which is set up much like that of our Federal Government. with student involvement centering around a Student Council tHouse of Representativesi. and Student Sen- ate tSenatei. This. along with the other changes which are being made to get more people involved. are help- ing to gild the golden frame of our school :pirit at Elston. facingl: Kevin Martin bares all. Felix Ducotel. iMike Keatingl sits at a table in the French Guinea store he tends. poring over the disasterous account books. When the bell rings and his wife Emilie tMaureen Maloneyl enters. fearing a sneak theif's entrance. both are unhappily Surprised by the woman who does come waddling in. Mme. Pa- role iShelley Fragemanl is a conniving customer who buys everything on a never ending credit. and can talk poor Feix out of any merchandise. After her departure. Emilie, makes reference to the three convicts working on their roof. Soon their daughter, Marie Louise. iKelly Dartl. enters announcing that Henri, the owner of the shop and Fe- lix's cousin, is in quarantine. Felix unhappily goes to get Henri and Paul out of quarantine. leaving Emilie to rush to the kitchen and Marie Louise to open a letter from a school- mate. INStill life .le ,1' l The show really begins to roll after Marie Louise faints and three men in prison uniforms creep quietly down the ladder from the roof. The laughs start the minute Joseph Ueff Kellyt reaches over to pick up the note. and continue through the whole play as he. Jules Uay Smidtl. Alfred Ueff PinnelD and their pet snake Adolf move into the Ducotel's lives as well as the hearts of the audience. As the convicts try to better the carefully structured existence of the Ducotels. a hilarious string of events occurs while everyone learns the sto- ries behind the convicts' imprison- ment. AlthOugh Felix decides not to get Paul tDanny Worn and Henri out of quarantine, Henri. played convincingly evil by sophomore Phil Timberlake. manages to get them off the ship him- self. When they storm angrily into the house in the middle of the night. the convicts decide it's time to do some- thing about the threats of Henri. After a heated argument with Paul, they find that he will eventually break Marie Louise's heart as well as turn them in to the authorities. They realize that although they have to get rid of Paul. too. it is unfortunately impossi- ble. When Paul comes Out of his Uncle's room yelling for a doctor because he'd just been bitten by a snake, the con- victs are estatic. realizing that per- haps good does triumph over evil! With the death of Paul. the convicts' only wish is that fate would send someone along to take his place in Ma- rie Louise's heart. As in all fairytales. fate answers their prayer by sending a handsome yOung man tMark Keatingl to her doorstep. Mr. Holdcraft once again has tri- umphed in presenting a hilarious play that marked a definite place in the hearts of all who saw My Three An- gels. Elston Students Explore New Worlds This past summer. several Elston students had the opportunity to under- go new adventures as they traveled to all parts of the globe. Stacy Attar spent a month in Helsin- ki. Finland as a member of the Michi- gan City Chapter of the Childrens ln- ternational Summer Village. In Finland. Stacy stayed with a family who had a girl her age, who will come to the Unit- ed States to stay with her family for a month this summer. Traveling through the country. to islands in the Gulf of Finland and to the Russian border. Stacy especially enjoyed visiting many famous artists homes and seeing the huge glass factories for which Finland is known. Beth Pleasants traveled to the other side of the world to spend time in To- kyo. Japan. As the only American at her CISV camp and a junior counselor. Beth helped organize activities for the kids, as well 35 Serving as a bridge of Kelly Dart Is Introduced to Speaker of the House. Tip O'Neill. and lllinors Senator. Dan communication between the children Ros'enkowsu' and adults. A typhoon made their planned trip to Mount Fuii impossible; but the people from the camp spent their time going to amusement parks. Japanese baseball games, and eating at traditional Japanese restaurants. Seniors Theresa Lake and Dani Li- vinghouse also had the opportunity to visit another country this Summer. spending time in Germany. In a completely different type of ad- venture, Kelly Dart went to Washing- ton DC. to serve as a Congressional Page for seven weeks. Meeting new friends. Kelly quickly learned the ad- vantages and disadvantages of living alone in our nations capitol. During her stay. Kelly shared as many new exper- iences as those who flew to other countries. and learned an unforgetta- ble lesson on how Our government real- ly works. Dani Livinghouse and Theresa Lake sightsee In Germany 26t$till life J: C t x Ln I M! 1 , Boys And Girls State Molds Future Leaders A combination of talent. drive. and good citizenship helped four students to be chosen for Hoosier Boy's and Girl's State this summer. At the end of Junior year. two boys and two girls are selected to represent Elston High School. This past year, Brian Attar, Mike Keating. Kristy Stark, and Allyson Forsythe traveled to Indiana State in Terre Haute to Iearn about politics and to experience it in action. Upon arrival. delegates were as- signed to the Federalist or Nationalist parties. Although they roomed accord- ing to cities and countries, their room- mates were members of opposing par- ties. Delegates were selected to of- fices on the city, county. and state levels. For a week Brian. Mike. Allyson, and Kristy worked in positions such as County Commissioner. Precinct Chair- man. City Sheriff. and as State Sena- tors. Although they fOund that politi- cians don't have it quite as easy as everyone thinks. they all enjoyed learning how politics really works and they enjoyed meeting and making new friends. I. Jan 4. l983 It is with deep remorse and sorrow that l inform you of the death of Mr. Gilbert Dehne our Science Department Chairman and fellow teacher who passed away of a heart attack on Thursday morning. December 30th. at St. Anthony Hospital in Crown Point. It is always most difficult for us to accept the untimely passing of an individual whom we know so well and whom we admire and respect. not only as an outstanding human being, but also as an outstanding teacher who gave so much of himself to his students and to those of the Elston Quiz Bowl which he sponsored. Mr. Dehne also founded the Science Fair for the Michigan City Area Schools in I955 and was instrumental in guiding the Science Fair to the great successes that it experienced throughout the years. On many occasions. Mr. Dehne shared with me in the privacy of my office his ever-present concern for the best education for the students assigned to him. This deep concern, along with his compassion for others. his passion for life itself. his ever-present sense of humor. his commitment for the teaching profession. and his ability to lead the members of the Elston High School Science Department to new and challenging dimenseions. made Mr. Dehne the outstanding educator that we knew him to be. I am also quite certain that in death. just as in life itself, as he experienced it. Mr. Dehne would not like us to dwell on the past. but he would want us to look forward to the future with hope, with dreams. and with determination to go forward and do the best we can. Verne K. Pep band, in case you ha ven '1 been to a basketball game or a pep sesston. helps to get everyone fired up for the game. They also helped raise spirits when Elston was behind. The jazz band is a small select group wtth a few members of the band. They have a style all their own. The bands put on a C hristmas con- cert and a Spring concert. When the bands combined with the choruses for these events. everyone attending was quite impressed. The Drum Majors this year were Pat Koch and Cheryl jaske. Pat and C heryl went to a drum major school over summer vacation where they learned the finer details of drum ma- joring. Under the Direction of Mr. Holdcraft taffectionately known as H? and its officers Prestdent Mike kealmg, Vice-Pres tori Wrob- Iewski. and Secretary Maureen Ma- loney. students have the chance to learn about all the aspects of theatre as well as participating in a variety of shows. In the fall. the M.C, Players put on a dramatic pla y. This year. ten mem- bers of the club did a great job of pulling together the comedy My Three Angels in just under a month. Last year. a tradition that had been halted due to a lack of space began again. Showcase '82 allowed members to share their different skills in this special type of variety show. During the spring. members take part in the musical, which is always a huge success. This past spring, Ihe King and I was enjoyed by an amazv ingly large crowd. Director Mr. McNabb has taken advantage of the new voices to put together five very harmonious grOups. When people come in as freshmen. they can ioln the Freshman choir. Each year after that. they can be in the concert choir. Although these groups practice separately. they do perform together as do the concert choir. This year the choirs will per- form in several concerts in the Per- forming Arts building. and selected members will travel to both Krueger and Barker to spark Interest in in- coming freshmen. Devil Magic Is the swung choir at Elston. To qualify for this. you must have at least some dancing ability and enjoy performing a lot. I was faced with quite a formidable challenge. In past years. with a solid economy. the sale of year- books was uSually accomplished easily. re- quiring only a modicum of work on the staff's part. Unfortunately. this year. we had a problem due to the sorry state of the economy. The only way. I felt. to circum- vent this problem was to produce the best yearbook ever; one that would. in fact. sell itself. Prior to the start of the school year. I started designing the book; cover. theme. section designs. type and copy styles all had to be done. My main intent was to include as many different design elements as possible. I wanted a distinct, original. attractive style for each section; one that would reinforce the artsy theme of the book. In addition. I wanted a book with class. Producing a quality yearbook is an ex- tremely arduous task. Without the help of a few very capable people. this book would not be what it is. At the risk of sounding effusive. l wOuId like to thank them for their help: Sam for the excellent pictures. the expedition with which you did them. and the extra work; Dave. for single-han- dedly doing the sports section with a negli- gable amount of error; Polly for all of the different things that I had you do; Allyson and Lori for bringing us as far out of the red as we'll ever be; and Mrs. Schwab for whoIe-heartedly supporting my decisions, for acting as a liaison when I wouldn't com- municate. and for being the best kind of advisor - both ubiquitous and reticent. Some of you will remember high school as your zenith. others of us will remember it as our nadir. In any case. this book will serve its purpose in helping you remember the way it was for you.
