Disputes with Arab oil companies and wheat deals with Russia brought criticism from consumers here at home, while foreign criticism came after our intenlention in troubled affairs in the Mediterranean area. National news was no less disturbing as the Watergate trials dragged on and on, and the slump in the economy caused problems for all, especially those on fixed incomes, such as senior citizens. President Ford had rough beginnings in office as he faced the unemployment problem, inflation, and a suffering stock market. The local scene was considerably brighter, though. Beachway began to take shape as the new News-Dispatch building opened, and plans for the new city hall and main library were advanced. Changes for the park area, which included a new bandshell and better pier facilities, seemed to be more than just rumor, and many businesses downtown underwent extensive remodeling. The south end of town continued growing as many new businesses opened throughout the year. These events involved the students of Elston because the futures of Elston students were bound to be affected by their final outcome. .. 's
