20 Events Students Experience Democratic Systems Ever wonder exactly how our governmental systems work? Last summer four Elston students gained enlightening political experience at Boys' and Girls' State where they participated in mock city, county, and state governments. Nancy Mershon and Cindy Edling attended Girls' State and Alex Armour and Ken Smith took part in Boys' State. Both sessions were held at Indiana State University in Terre Haute. The students were assigned to dorms, each representing a county, and floors, each representing a city. Each city was divided randomly into two political parties. Conventions were then held to decide party policies and to elect candidates for office. After elections, each member of the mock state had a governmental job for the rest ofthe week. Assemblies included informative lectures, honor presentations, and a talent show. All four representatives reported an enjoyable, valuable week.
