Competing for scliolarsliips, gifts, and tlie chance to go on to the state contest were eleven girls from lllston and five from St. lNlIai'y's who entered the second annual jr. Miss Pageant, sponsored by the Michigan City Jaycees. The competition was based on poise, talent, and personality. Jeanne Periolet of St. Marys won the Jr. Bliss title, and two lllston girls, Peggy Scliwartzenberg and Cris Sadenwater, placed in the finals. Pam Brown and Helen Shock tied for the Miss Congeniality award, presented by the Jaysliees.

Students contribute money and effort to charities Ringing doorbells, making toys, donating time, money, and old clothes-these were the ways El- ston students worked for charity. The National Honor Society sponsored the clothing drive. For two weeks homerooms accumulated old clothes which were sent to depressed areas of the United States. Honor Society was also in charge of raising money for Channel 11, Chicago's educational tele- vision station. Fashionettes utilized their sewing talents by making dolls to send to the Michigan City Therapy Center. The Elston Squeeze was the school's all-out effort for charity. Students dug deep and contributed over one thousand dollars to be divided among seven charities. Homeroom competition was generated by a trophy awarded to the sponsor group giving the most money. By taking an active part in the daily school routine and assisting veteran teachers, the boys and girls of the cadet teaching program often decide whether teaching will be their chosen Held. Elston's Trade and Industry Program has re- ceived the ready support of community busi- ness men. T Sz I participants coordinate class- room study with fully paid working hours.
