Music Department combines learning with entertaining ilflrzdrigalx l11zz'r'r1l11.it minutr' 7't'1It'IZ7'XllIIJl'f07't'flI17'0gl'!l77l. 18 The vocal department, led by Mr. Louis Timber- lake, was made up of five choruses and a perform- ing group, Madrigals. The choruses learned the basics of choral singing and gained poise for con- certs. Every spring the combined choruses of four schools come together under a guest con- ductor and present a concert. Michigan City was the host last year, and LaPorte was this year. Under the direction of lNIr. Thomas Hendricks, the band, without sufhcient uniforms, led the cheers at the football games. There were two per- forming groups-one, the pep band, added life and spirit to our pep sessions and basketball games, the other, the dance band, provided music at the school dances. Together these two departments worked on the combined assemblies given in both spring and fall, the school musical, 'cThe Music Manfland a program for the opening of Michigan Boulevard.

The stu- dents and teachers of Elston High again an- swered a resounding yes at the annual Hams and Lambs Talent Show, sponsored by the Na- tional Honor Society. Mr. Lootens, acting as emcee, injected witty comments and imperso- nations throughout the program, which fea- tured an all teacher cheerleading squad and a monologue by the Dick Gregory of Michigan City, Vernon Payne. Scholarship pins recognize achievement Although the benehts of scholastic effort usually cannot be measured, knowledge and satisfaction reward the good student. This year for the first time at lilston more tangible proof of achieve- ment was offered. Scholarship pins were awarded to students who had maintained high grade averages-bronze pins for two consecutive semes- ters of honor workg silver pins for four consecu- tive semesters. Mr. Lonzo supervised the program with eighty students receiving pins. Seniors received gold pins for six semesters at graduation.
