ovember 22, 1963 Most students, unaecnstomed to hearing the new intercom, glanced about in puzzlement when an urgent voice broke into Elston's class- rooms midday on that Friday in November. Within moments all sat transnxed, listening incredulously to the report of the shooting of President Kennedy in Dallas. Dismissal bell rang, but there was little movement until the announcer had finished. Then students moved slowly, quietly to their next classes. Many of those returning from lunch were told the news by friends and thought it a morbid joke. How- eyer, confirmation came. and then ofhcial word of the President's death. liverywhere reactions were seen: girls sobbed openlyg heads were bowed in prayerg the unpoetic found release in poetryg the Student Council met to consider appropriate measuresg the flag was lowered to half mast, A few things went on with near-normalcys-book reports were given, an ICLSTONIAN deadline was met, and that night a basket- ball game was played. But these diversions offered, at best, only tem- porary reliefg the knowledge and burden of the assassination of our President weighed heavily upon everyone. From incrcdulity and dismay, through fears and grief, to renewed purpose and strength-this was the intense pattern of the tragedy. 9 V 1 it ,7 ff I N , ,rfb ,VL ,ili el' Lf gf f' f fi' flvi 7 ' fi! t, V JJ Y, Ls. n J I X .f .t t f it V W' f . - 1 ' , , I IV ' 1 1 , ,- , , , f ' 1 ' .
