Qleft to rightl Jim Irons, Alan Hill, lerry Dodson, XVilma Dalenberg, Mr. Hibbs, Iudy Moser, and Susan Kienitz. of orld tongues In this age of jets and satellites the world seems to be shrinking, and all people tnust learn to liye with each other. Language is one of the biggest bar- riers, so Iilston offers two years of either I.atin, Span- ish, or German. First year Latin involves vocabulary and grammar. Second year students study mythical stories and fillffklll 's Cmr1n1er1lzoie.s on ilu' GaI1icII'1m-. Cionyersing in Spanish helps both first and second year students to learn to speak fluently. The study of people and customs of Spanish-speaking countries add to this course. lloth years of German are spent learning grammatical constructions, vocabulary, and idioms through stories of German history and culture and useful everyday conversations. Naturally. linglish is most important because we TO DO, OR NOT TO DO: that is the question. The choice is hard and requires much contemplation on the part of -Iohn XVilliams. still have to get along with ourselyes. The sopho- mores begin with an over-all introduction to litera- ture, including some translations of foreign works and a preliminary to Sliakespc-are's works with his play, julim Cuectur. This builds up to a thorough picture of the history and flowering of American literature in the junior year. In addition, Dickens's A Tale of Treo Cilies, Tennyson's lrlylls of the King. and Shakespeares Hamlet dig deeper into the clas- sics. The climax comes in senior Ifnglish, which traces the development of linglish literature. Not only is the literature a must for academic students but also the grammar and theme writing given the second semester. 2I

lf a Lift' magazine reporter were assigned to a story of the typical teaching' of social studies, he might well choose Hlston as his subject. The reporter with tablet and 'pencil in hand and a catnera slung over his shoulder begins his research tour. His first stop is a sophotnore world history class, where students are discussing the ruins of Pom- peii. Next the man goes to a l'. S. history class. Here he finds students busily looking through Antericmt Ilmimgc' magazines for reports. A special govern' ment progratn is his next stop. Senior students are being treated to an assembly featuring both city mayoral candidates. .Xfter this he attends an academic class of advanced social problems. The stttdents here are deeply en, grossed in a discttssion of juvenile delinquency. His tour now at an end, he has a tablet full of notes and a pocket full of ttsed films for his story. of past and present CONTENDING IN THE l959 CITY ELEC- TIONS Mayor l 1'ancis Fedder and .-Xlvin D.
