Qin Sluhu 111 Ill 411111.11 Across the east wall of our study hall extends this inspiring mural familiar to every student It was painted in 1925 by our own local artist Robert W Grafton who gave of his time and talent in the creation of this work of art generously assisted by the Rotary Club of Michigan City which provided the materials used This panel is an accurate representation of the area at the mouth of Trail Creek as it appeared about one hundred years ago when Michigan City was an important shipping point for commerce between the East and the Middle West and especially for northern Indiana A sand bar at the mouth of Trail Creek blocked passage to vessels larger than those shown here Over the two plank toll roads leading to town came long lines of ox carts loaded with grain to be stored temporarily in the elevators one of which can be seen near the mouth of the harbor The long meat pack mg house at the bend of the creek likewise served farmers of northern Indiana and shippers to eastern markets The almost barren dune known as Hoosier Slide was over one hun dred seventy Five feet in height It was such a striking landmark and such an unusual geological attrac- tion before it was removed for com- mercial purposes that its fame was nationwide. The Indians represent- ed were of the Pottawattomie tribe, , which still inhabited this region. This panel measures thirty-four i feet by ten feet and is painted on canvas, which is glued to the wall. The canvas and adhesive together weigh about four hundred pounds, and the efforts of ten men were re- quired to put it in place. The back- ground was started in the spring of 1925 in the artist's Chicago studio, but the canvas was finished on a huge framework in the study hall as the school was being completed. 8
