TABLE OF CONTENTS CLASSES., MEMOIRS SPORTS ... CLUBS.... STAFF.... ‘ ‘(2%ccc4i i 7kuc 'tye i The year has come and gone and many things have affected the world, Elsberry, and even EHS. 1987-88 was filled writh many events that could change the world and the people in it. Many surprising things have happened. One of the most surprising events was Mik- hail Gorbachev of Russia visiting America to have peace talks with President Reagan. The players of the stock market had a shock this past year on October 19 when Black Tuesday occurred. The U.S. has been filled with speeches and debates as the Presidential Pri- maries have taken place. Also, America cele- brated the 200th anniversary of the U.S. Con- stitution. All hearts went out to Baby Jessica as Americans waited for her to be rescued from an abandoned water well. Also, the American people’s faith in TV evangalism and the PTL Club has been questioned due to the scandals of the TV evangelists. The world still has no cure for the fatal disease “Aids” w’hich is com- ing closer and closer to home. Elsberry cheered on the St. Louis baseball Cardinals as they won the National League Championship and went on to play in the World Series losing to the San Francisco Giants. Also, some people were hap- py and some were sad wThen the football Cardi- nals moved to Phoenix, Arizona. Elsberry had a couple of new additions to the community. A new club formed w as the Community Betterment Association. Its pur- pose is to make Elsberry a well-rounded com- munity to live in. In a recent election, William Brown was elected as the new mayor defeating Mayor Bill Waggoner, mayor for many years. At EHS this past year many exciting things have happened. The highlight of the year was Elsberry hosting the Girls’ IA District basket- ball Championship in a game against the Clop- ton Hawks. The score was Elsberry 42, Clopton 37. The girls traveled to state sectionals at Washington to be defeated by New Bloomfield. “When You Wish Upon A Star” was the theme for Fall Festival. The freshmen’s wish came true, because they won first prize in the float contest and Raquel Roller and Jason Bur- nette were crowned Fall Festival queen and King. Joanna Hagemeier and Brian Ray, so- phomores, were victorious at Christmas dance. King and Queen for prom were seniors, Dee Anna McGlaughlin and Steven Vaughn. The 1988 Homecoming was filled with an exciting line up of events. The week started out with Hawaiian Day as Corey Talbot and Jason Burnette won the day. The winners of Famous Couples Day were Pokey and Gumby (Amy Howard and Jenny Lynn Wall) and Tammy and Jimmy Bakkcr (Marcie Laird and Corey Tal- bot). Next was 50’s day, and the winners were Lascena Shaffer, Raquel Roller, and Brian Ray. The last day was red and white day and the w inners were Becky Wolf and Henry Bur- kemper. The winners of spirit week were the freshmen, the class of “91”. Homecoming King and Queen were from the freshmen class, Kris Jeans and Yancy Burbridge. The high school band had a full year of money making projects. The community, par- ents, students and friends helped the band to raise enough money to buy new uniforms. The band received the uniforms in time to wear them for contest at Mexico and the spring con- cert. This year’s track season has been a good one for EHS. The highlight of the season was when the boys placed second at the state track meet. Students participating at the state meet were Kyle Blair, 100, 200, and 400 meter dash and the long jump. Also, Jamie Burkemper, 800 meter run. In the 3200 meter relay were Erin Tapley, Jesse McGlaughlin, Chad Stone, Jamie Burkemper, and Eric Korasick, alternate. Representing girls’ track were Raquel Roller, 300 meter 1owt hurdles. Participating in the 3200 meter relay were Julie Wommack, Sandy Cromer, Raquel Roller, Lisa Palmer and Becky Wolf, alternate. The 800 meter relay team members were Heather Frederick, Raquel Roller, Joanna Hagemeier, and Lisa Palmer. As one can tell, the year was filled with many events, good and bad. In the future I hope everyone can look back on 1987-88 and remem- ber how great a year it has been. 2 CRUISIN Left to Right, FRONT ROW: THE 1987-88 YEARBOOK STAFF Sheila Anthony, Erin Shaffer, Jennie Barron, Jackie Webb, Lacy Dwiggins. Starting 5 and sometimes 6 freshmen in most of the games, ending up 3-8 really wasn’t that bad. I think the kids played well and also got some valuable experi- ence which should help for the next few years to come,” com- mented Coach Creech. A disappointing loss in the second game of Districts stopped the Lady Indians from advancing to sectionals. One positive note this season was the Tri-Conference Championship. We tied with Van-Far and Clopton and won a Conference victory over Troy, 14-6. Individual achievements this season were acknowledged as three members achieved All Conference Honors. They were Kathryn Cord- siemon, 2nd base, First team; Angie Burkemper, Shortstop, First Team; and Stephanie Slaughter, 3rd base, Second Team. The Lady Indians’ end- ing record was 9 wins, 6 losses.
