The Elsberry High School 72 SMOKE SIGNAL Bob Edwards..................................................Editor Mike Briscoe.......................................Associate Editor Tom Kelly..........................................Assistant Editor Kevin Howard.....................................Business Manager GENERAL STAFF Debbie Anderson Debbie Fetch Keith Moudy Bill Cox TYPISTS Jerry Horton Nina Scott I We, the 1972 Senior Class, dedicate this yearbook to Randall Kristofferson, Principal. His inspi- ration and untiring efforts over the past five years have endeared him, not only to his students, but also to the people of Elsberry. Randall Kristofferson is a graduate of Van-Far High School, Vandalia, Missouri. After his gradua- tion from high school, he attended Missouri Valley College, where he received his bachelor's de- gree, with a major in math and minors in history and education. For four years he taught math at O'fallon Technical High School in Saint Louis, where hewas also their junior varsity basketball coach. After receiving his master's degree from Missouri University in 1967, he came to Elsberry as high school principal. While in Elsberry, Mr. Kristofferson has been very active in Kiwanis and the Khoury League baseball team. He is also the Chairman of the Board of Deacons and Sunday School teacher at the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. 2 As we bid Mr. K. farewell, we give this book and the work behind it to him as we leave. With it, goes a wish lor much happiness and success in years to follow. TO THE STUDENTS AT EHS I have been your principal for the past five years and 1 would like to say the following to each of you: You have a good school here at Elsberry, one of which you can be proud, so do not degrade it nor make fun of it; instead enjoy it. To enjoy anything you must be a part of it, and only you can say how you are to be a part of Elsberry High School. I would also like to challenge each of you to have faith, not only in your school and in yourself but in God. God is all-powerful and all-knowing, but more than that He cares for each of you, and He has a desire for you to know Him personally. Only you can make that decision. I trust that you will make the right one, in fact to me the only one. Again thank you for five wonderful and full years. 1 will continue to pray for you and May God Bless each and every one of you. Lovingly GONE About the little chambers of my heart Friends have been coming - going - many a year The doors stand open there. Some, lightly stepping, enter; some depart. Freely they come and freely they go, at will. The walls give back their laughter; all day long They fill the house with song. One door alone is shut, one chamber still. Mary E. Coleridge (1861-1907) I. THt SCHOOL BOARD STRIVING My earnest wish is that the school year just completed has been filled with meaningful and joyful experiences for each of you. Hopefully meaningful, because school experiences should cause students to become aware of the physical world about them and the spiritual world within them. As a result, man reaches his fullest poten- tial as he becomes linked with nature. Hopefully joyful, because the high school years ought to be funfilled, exciting and memorable. Seniors, in bidding you farewell, I entreat you not to allow your possession of a high school diploma lull you into apathy towards learning. Be ever aware that the mind needs learning experiences as the body needs food and exercise. Continue to read and inquire and thus discover. Underclassmen, to you is passed the staff on which is unfurled this high school's traditions. You have tne op- portunity, reexamine, refine and add to them. The best way to do this is to strive toward realizing your fullest potential as a student and as a person. Endeavor to acquire the ability to speak and write clearly and precisely. Develop a set of values and have courage enough to defend them. Become humble in spirit and empathic in attitude towards all humanity. And lastly, support your school activity program both actively and through observation. If you work diligently toward the accomplishment of all of these, you'll become proud of yourselves which will in turn lead to a greater pride in your school. This would indeed be something to behold because most assuredly, this community is proud of you. 4 Louis Chaney Superintendent of Schools ADMINISTRATION Mr. Louis Chaney Superintendent of Schools Mrs. Reva Cox Secretary to the Principal Miss Brenda Howard Secretary to the Principal 6 Randall Kristofferson High School Principal Michael Mitchell Guidance Counselor James Mayes Elementary School Principal FACULTY CAROLYN BLACK Shorthand Clerical I and II F.B.L.A. We didn't agree. Fi- nally Cher picked the boy, and I chose the girl. This was a difficult decision, since you had eight excellent candidates. We have made our selection based on the feeling that a pleasant smile indicated a pleasing personality. All were nice-looking, but we did not feel beauty alone was a sufficient basis for our choice.
