1969 Smoke Signa Jim Mayes, Advisor David Suddarth, Editor Cheri Rountree, Assistant Editor Dedication Since John Harris entered the Elsberry school system, his time and energy have been devoted to the improvement of each of his students. Not only has he worked with his classes as a group, but he has also been willing to instruct stu- dents both before and after school. His love for music was contagious, and many a student has left Elsberry High School with a greater appreciation for the fine arts. This spring the Elsberry High School faculty lost a man who has given the best years of his life to one of the highest of all aspirations, guiding young minds along the paths of knowledge. It is to him, Mr. John Harris, that we wish to dedicate our yearbook. ADMINISTRATION FACULTY A dm inistration The Lincoln County It II school district is quite fortunate to have a young and progressive admini- stration. The foresight of these gentlemen, has made possible the outstanding achievements realized in the Llsberry school system in the last few years. Our hats are off to these dedicated gentlemen. Jack Walz Superintendent of Schools 4 Randall Kristofferson High School Principal Board of Education Isabel Miller, treasurer of Board of Education and Secretary to the Superintendent. Susan Hammack, secretary to principal. Retva Cox, librarian. 5 Faculty To instruct young minds in the way of wisdom is one of the highest ideals that man can attain. What profession cart accomplish this goal better than teaching? The Class of 1969 wishes to express its sincere appreciation to the dedicated faculty of Elsberry High School. Frances Alloway Int. This young man fought in a far off land and tried to keep our country free. He was mortally wounded while trying to carry an injured brother to safety. Sergeant Arlin Darrell Collins was such a man. Though there were praises to his courage, medals to his bravery, and a monument to his memory, these could not begin to compensate for the loss in- curred by his family and friends. Therefore, we, the 1969 Yearbook Staff dedicate this page in memoriam, as our humble tribute to Sergeant Collins, and express our belief that his death was not in vain. 10 SENIORS Seniors (left to right) Sgt.-at-arms—Wayne Ray, Secretary—Raenet Peasel, President—Gary Whyte, Vice-President- David Behle, Historian--Betty Gladney, Treasurer—Larry Tillotson. AA Work and Play (above) In October of 1968, the new Elsberry High School was visited by nearly one-hundred and fifty students as the EMO Student Council Conference met at EHS for the first time. A business meeting was conducted in the morning and then lunch was served in the cafe- teria. After entertainment by EHS stu- dents, Doctor David Doctorian gave an inspiring talk on the principles of free- dom and education for the afternoon program. As one Bowling Green student put it as he was leaving, It was the best meeting I've been to! 45 Senior Play MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS The Cast ...And if you forgive me, dear Mother, I'll never get drunk anymore! 46 Your father will never get another chance... Graduation May 23rd, 1969, became a milestone date for 48 seniors as they marched into the E.H.S. auditorium. Apart from past tradition, the class chose a fellow classmate, Bobette Sanders, as their speaker. First came the ever so solemn march into the gymnasium. Forty-eight seniors, resplendid in blue and white, filed into the auditorium. The Reverend David Plumbley delivered the invocation, class valedictorian, Bobette Sanders delivered the graduation address, and the secretary of the Board of Education, Charles Howard passed out the diplomas to the graduation class. Awards and scholarships were given and the benediction was delivered. The program ended as the seniors marched out to the traditional tune played by the E.H.S. band. 47 Mr John Harris’ last official act as a member of the E.H.S. faculty was to lead the band in the graduation recessional. During graduation ceremonies he was given special recognition hie mi+etandinflr contributions to education. 48 ORGANIZATIONS 49 N.H.S Front How; (Left to Right); Mr. Shores, sponsor; Kay Hartley, treasurer; Dave Suddarth, vice president; Bobette Sanders, president; Glenda Logan, secretary; Mr. Sowinski, sponsor.
