It lets us attend our churches, stroll in our parks, and par- ticipate in our usual social functions. It also lets us disclaim our involvement in it and lets many of our citizens or future citizens declare that the men participating in it are villains, assassins, or war mongers. Paul Dickerson graduated from Elsberry High School in 1966 still a boy. He assumed a man-sized responsibility shortly thereafter, but will never be able to tell those of us who are here about it. The war is usually far away. We of E. H. S. dedicate this page to a man who died trying to keep it that way. 22 J u u t Dickie Mayes, President Cheri Rountree, Vice President Patty Hagemeier, Secretary Gary Whyte, Treasurer Larry Traw, Sgt.-at-Arms David Suddarth, Historian Sandra Allison Martha Bass David Behle Dennis Blair Wilma Jean Blair Phillip Blair Debbie Brumagin Joyce Burger Judy Clarkson Keith Dameron Betty Gladney Carl Gladney Patty Hagemeier David Hausgen Brenda Howard Tom Howard Robert Kinion Lynne Kirkhart Sharon Mowry Danny Moyer Debbie Moyer Randy Norton Ellen O'Brien Bobby Palmer Kathy Palmer Raenet Peasel Marjorie Lageman Bob Lee Dicky Mayes 25 Lynda Riffle Peggy Robinson Brenda Ross Randy Ross Cheri Rountree Bobette Sanders Tina Scherrer David Schoeller Larry Tillotson Larry Traw Sharon Walden Doug Waggoner James Welch Jay White Dickie Whiteside Gary Whyte 26 £opko tm Class Paul Behle, President Judy Lamb, Secretary Marc Hill, Sgt.-at-Arms Mike Talbot, Vice President Sandy Harmon, Treasurer Craig Koch, Parliamentarian 28 Judy Brown Tim Burke Kathy Calvin Veronica Collins Glenda Conaway Berry Davis Brenda Davis Jo Ann Davis Mike Davis Donna Dietz Wesley Fakes Sandy Harmon Kay Hartley Wendell Hemmer Earnie Hensley Marc Hill 29 Beany Houston Robert James Craig Koch Leslie LaBanca Mary JoLageman Judy Lamb Sandra Ligon Janet Livesay Glenda Logan Jeannine Miller Allen Mills Michael Moore Randy Phillips Tim Phillips Robert Pratt Randy Richards 30 Jim Ricks Bonnie Riffle Dottie Robinson Billy Shaffer Karen Shannon Junior Smith Dennis Spies Kenneth Strobl Michelle Strobl Jimmy Stone Danny Suddarth Kenny Suddarth Mike Talbot Donna Thurman Marcia Wagner Carla Watson 31 32 Ptes(ihuxK CJms OfjfjicM Greg White, President Rebecca Stone, Secretary Gilbert Dameron, Parliamentarian Stan Miller, Vice President Bob Brumagin, Treasurer 34 Bobby Brumagin Rose Mary Calvin John Chanitz Tony Clarkson David Collins Gil Dameron Missy Damron Allen Ray Davis Vickie Davis Judy Downing Mary Dwiggins Cathryn Fakes Patrick Fakes Patty Fessler Pam Fisher Larry Foster Dennis Fox Le Roy Gladney Melcher Harding 35 Gerry Hausgen Jo Ann Hemmer Jeannie James Mary Kinion Donnie Kinsler Billy Knox Marilyn Lageman Niles Leverington Mike Ligon Mary Locklin Leslie Lonsberry Peggy Mayes Bill McKay Robert Mills Stan Miller Sandy Norton Johnny O'Brien Harry Gene Ogden Robert Pickard 36 Danny Reed Dennis Reed Dennis Rice Kathy Riffle Susan Riffle Lester Simmons Dena Skirvin Jan Stewart Janie Smith Sharon Stewart Phyllis Strobl Tom Sullenger Elizabeth Taylor Georgia Traw Debbie Waggoner Allen Watkins Mindy Welch Greg White Gene Whyte 37 Not Pictured: David Cordsiemon, Mark Nixon, Becky Stone Q dcyL CIms PiOphtoCy In the summer of 1998 I boarded a TWA airliner to go to New York. I was thinking about the kids I knew when I was a student at EHS. As I was about to settle back comfortably in my seat I saw the very attractive and familiar face of our stewardess for the flight, and it turned out to be Cathy Anderson of the class of 1968. Of course we recognized each other. I mentioned how much I would like to know where all the other 68'ers were, and her face brightened. You just happen to be at the right place to find out , said Cathy. I am organizing a re-union of our class, and 1 have just located the last of them today. Let me get my brief case. She returned with a sheaf of letters, which she laid in my lap. We read them together, and here is what we found: Bill Whyte and George Shaffer have taken over the Beatles, working out of London. Johnnie Lamb is the new Federal Liquor inspector, with headquarters in Washington. Steve Bagley is a math prof in the east. Yale. Harvara and Princeton all bid so high for his services that he travels continually, commuting between the three. Jerry Anthony runs Wild Wheels , a speed shop in San Francisco, having put Offenhauser and Ferrari out of business. Arnold Blair is player-coach of the St. Louis Hawks. Diann Thomas operates the biggest talent agency for movie starlets in Hollywood. Diane Tapley is in training for her third round in the Olympics, now doing the mile in 3:27. Irene Hausgen has just beaten all comers to become the world's champion Lady wrestler, and is trying to negotiate a contract under which she can win the men's champion- ship too. Sherry Lavy is New York's top hair stylist and cosmetician. Mike Lilley has just taken over the Tonight Show Band from Doc Severinson, and Steve Lilley is the newly elected senator from the moon. Londa Locklin is now married. She and her husband are both preachers, now operating a mission among the Eskimos. Janice Brown is the Home Ec teacher at EHS. Irving Powell has replaced the aging star Bill Cosby on I Spy.” Lloyd (Sonny) Powelson is an opera singer with the Metropolitan in New York. Carl Knox drives racing cars, and this year won the 4th of July Classic at Indy. Mike Hartley is a police captain in Chicago. Pam Sul- lenger is office manager for the largest installation of IBM. Janice Teasley is in the movies, where she plays the role of heart-breaker for Ace Films. Jo Ann Riffle and Gail Suddarth who were already married live quietly in Elsberry where they are bringing up their families. Sam Bufford is the head monkey trainer at the St. Louis zoo. Bob Dwiggins is Secretary of Agriculture in the cabinet of President Chester Koch in the U. S. capital at Washington. Tommy Martin has made a fortune creating real tricky crossword puzzles for his many fans. Ronna Masterson (Mrs. Dick Mayes) has promised to come if Dick will baby-sit their 8 kids. Mrs. Glenn Van Matre (Patty LaBanca) operates a private kindergarten for her own and several other children. Kathleen Collins is secretary for Hilton Hotel chain. Sandra Hagemeier is with TWA, but not as a stewardess. She is their first lady airliner pilot. Steve Gray runs the world's biggest wrecking yard in Los Angeles. Polly Foster is a college teacher, professor of flute at Washington University. Mike Riffle has just won the Mr. America title in national competition. Alma Lou Richards has a widespread chain of beauty salons, 139 in all, in locations from Florida to Maine. Linda Rice is the guidance Counselor at EHS. Raymond Skirvin is a success at running a large fertilizer factory in the wilds of Alaska. June Morris runs a big school for cheerleaders in Detroit, while husband Mike looks after the kids. Marshall Suddarth is Drum Major of the North American Air Defense Band. Elaine Davis is reputed to now be a millionaire from operation of her popular reducing salon in St. Louis. Mark Dickerson writes a column for the New York Times, advice to the lovelorn, under the caption of Markie Malarkie. Nancy Downing is a lecturer on all subjects at a mid- western university, this type work having been suggested by the three-time wins of the international talkathon. By the time we had looked these all over we were at Idlewild airport. We looked forward to the re-union with great pleasure, for all our classmates seem to have made their marks in the world. 38 Eitbewuj Chapter, Fuium Fom pm Oh 1967-'6S FRONT ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: Sponsor, Mr. Howard Harmon, Dickie Mayes, Gary Whyte, Steve Lilley, Bill Whyte, Mike Lilley, Larry Tillotson, Paul Behle. We members of the 1968 Smoke Signal Staff have a unique privilege in that we have made the last yearbook made at E. H.S. as we now know it. By next year, our high school will be completely different from what it is now. Assembling the hundreds of pictures and piles of necessary information for this year- book would have been impossible without the cooperation of the students and faculty of E. H.S. We members of the 1968 Smoke Signal Staff thank you for a challenging and enjoy- able task. 82 PopvJkxlty PM MOST POPULAR Steve Bagley Ronna Masterson Marc Hill Sandy Harmon Mike Hartley Jan Stewart
