?3x ' THE 1967 SMOKE SIGNAL Elsberry High School Elsberry, Missouri Mr. John Harris, Sponsor Jim Turner, Editor Gilbert Watts, Assistant Editor Janet Peecher, Business Manager Judy Dotson, Head Typist Typists Fran Houston Brenda Cash Photographers Larry Biackmore Brenda Cash Judy Dotson The teaching profession lost a valuable member due to the death of Mrs. Edith G. Jones last October 5. Mrs. Jones was deeply interested in the development of youth through education. Her deep concern for young people led her to be a friend to students, as well as an educator. She had a deep understanding of the problems of her students and tried to help them in every way possible. This great understanding prompted her former students to seek her help, which was always offered, even when they went on to further their education. Mrs. Jones always tried to stress to her students the importance of education in their everyday lives. Mrs. Jones made many lasting friendships during her teaching career, and she will be long remembered by her former colleagues and students at Elsberry, where she spent ten years devoted to the betterment of edu- cation. We are dedicating the 1967 smoke Signal to her memory. We told Mrs. Jones of our decision and the following letter was received a few days before her death: To the Staff and Sponsors of the Elsberry 1967 Smoke Signal: It is with great pleasure and a feeling of humility 1 accept the honor of having the 1967 Annual dedicated to me. I sincerely regret not being able to be with you this year. I hope your future is as pleasant as the past years when I worked with you. Thank you very much for this great honor. 2 Sincerely, with love, Edith G. Jones ADMINISTRATION MR. JACK WALZ. He gave his life for his country. He volunteered for combat service in Viet Nam, because he loved his country and his fellow man. His life was the price he paid. This page is respectfully dedicated to the memory of First Lieutenant Denis Wayne Galloway by the 1967 Smoke Signal, that we may not forget his supreme sacrifice. 10 SENIORS Left to right: Gil Watts, President; Benny Wagner, Vice-President; Janet Peecher, Secretary; Sara Waters, Treasurer; Rita Downing, Historian; Alan Turner, Sgt.-at-arms. SENIOR CLASS OFFICER’S As we, the Seniors of 1967, prepare to leave forever the halls of old E.H.S,, we fondly recall the many memories and accomplishments of our high school career. When Freshmen, we reigned over the captivating Fall Festival, as Judy Horton and Gilbert Watts rode to the royal throne on the winning float. As Sophomores, our glory continued as Benny Wagner escorted the F.F. A. Chapter Sweetheart, Sara Waters. We spent the third year of high school working and playing hard, and making exciting, sweep- ing plans for the final big year. And now--our Senior year has arrived! It began successfully as we once again gave the Fall Festival a charming queen -- Cindy Galloway, escorted by Sam Steward. Our ingenious work and planning, produced the most beautiful Christmas Dance ever as Janet Peecher and Doc Wilson reigned over the royal holiday court. We have many unexpected plans to crowd into the last brief minutes of our final year, but we now take time to say, Thank you, E. H. S., for the education and the opportunities you have given us. 12 THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1967 CAROLYN ASH PHYLLIS AKERS JIM BARNES JERRY BARRON LARRY BLACKMORE 13 PEARLIE BOYD JOE BRTSrnr BRENDA CASH JOHN BURGER JUDY DOTSON 14 RITA DOWNING 15 JUDY HAGEMEIER WADE GRIMES PHYLLIS HAGEMEIER 16 FORREST HARE JUDY HORTON JOAN HASTEN DAVID HENSLEY FRAN HOUSTON 17 CARLIENA MELTON ELMER MILLER BECKY MAUPIN 18 19 donna ricks JEAN SLAUGHTER TOM ROGERS VERNON ROCKWELL LORAINE STAMPER 20 HUGH STEAVENSON SAM STEWARD DEAN TAPLEY ALAN TURNER PHYLLIS TANNEHILL 21 JIM TURNER BENNY WAGNER SAM VAN SCOYK ROBERTA VAN MATRE SARA WATERS 22 GIL WATTS BRUCE WIPKE DUSTY WAYMAN BRENT WILSON KENNETH WOODS 23 PHYLLIS AKERS Band-----------------------1,2 F. REQUIEM (as the staff sees it) Now that the pictures are pasted, And the copy has all been sent. Now that the proof is corrected, And our very last penny spent, We shall rest, and faith, we shall need it. We shall sleep for a month or two. We shall star once again in our classes. And study the whole week through. And no one shall duck at our coming. For pictures that haven't been made. The couples we hounded for snapshots. Can spoon once again unafraid. Our brows will no longer be wrinkled. With lines of worry and care. We can rest from our weary labors. With plenty of time to spare And we swear by all that is holy. That never again we'll be caught. Attempting to publish a darn old book. That doesn't come out as it ought. No more shall we look for the glory That goes with an editors name. But shall be contented if our days are spent. In other roads of fame. 28 CLASSES JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS Left to right: Johnnie Lamb - Pres.; Carl Knox - Hist.; Mike Lilley - Pari.; Nancy Downing - Sec.; Diane Tapley - Treas.; Steve Lilley - Pari.; Steve Gray - Vice Pres. The task was both delightful and difficult, since all four contestants appear to possess the necessary qualifications to be chosen queen! However, after due deliberation, I selected the attractive young lady in photo 2 to reign as your Smoke Signal royalty. My congratulations to all who participated, and my thanks again for asking me to play a small part in your school activities. Needless to say, I would enjoy receiving a copy of your Yearbook after it is published. JUDY LAMB Freshman Candidate BRENDA ROSS Sophomore Candidate Kfe. A FRAN HOUSTON Senior Candidate 61 RONNA MASTERSON What an assignment you’ve given me. It's impossible! Number One looks like a future Congressman — or even a future LBJ. Number Two looks like the leader of the In group of school and is probably the snappiest dresser. Number Four, I’ll bet, is highest in the college scholarship ranks. Finally after endless changing of mind and deliberation, I chose Number Three as the one who probably would be the first choice of the girls at school. PAUL BEHLE: Freshman I do hope it’s a popular choice. And also, ? hope it doesn't make me too many enemies among the backers of Numbers 1, 2 and ij..
