Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1965 volume:

On May 14, 1964, the world mourned the loss of one of its greatest citizens of this century. In honor of the late Clarence Cannon, Presi- dent Johnson and many other dignitaries came to Elsberry for the funeral ceremonies. Elsberry was really on the maps. People came from everywhere, near and far, to pay homage to the deceased Congressman and to see the high officials who arrived in such large num- bers. The First Baptist Church was the scene of the funeral itself, and people crowded the area. Secret servicemen, reporters, photogra- phers by the score, and helicopters all added to the color of it all. Yes, it was a great day for Elsberry, even though she lost the greatest man she had ever produced. QMOKE QIGNAL ELSBERRY HIGH 8CHOOL EL8BERRY, MI8SOURI David Bagley, Editor King Davis, Ass't. Editor Suzanne Damron, Business Manager Typists Pam Powelson Judy La Rue Jean Evans Billy Reed Allen Ricks Gary Watts Keith Palmer Photographer: Gerald Shannon On May 12, 1964 the life of the Honorable Clarence Cannon was ended. His death terminated forty-two years of service to his country. A man of boundless energy and high ideals, Mr. Cannon labored endlessly for that which he deemed right, proper, and in the nation's best interest. Remembering that leaders of his caliber are all too rare, we the Class of 1965 herewith dedicate this page in memorium to Clarence Cannon and to his work for the benefit of the nation he loved and its people. 2 Culver-Stockton Memphis State University, M.A. Superintendent Guidance Counselor MR. PATRICK A. NICKENS Southeast Missouri State College Principal World History National Honor Society Sponsor MRS. ISABEL MILLER Secretary ADMINISTRATION An Administration is defined as the persons in charge of directing ... Directing something as complex as a high school can be as demanding a task as is found in the whole realm of administration. There are so many areas in which a school administration must be versed that he can truly be called a Jack-of-all-trades. There are salesmen to be handled and letters to be written. Students appear with any and all sorts of problems to be handled immediately. Now and then an irate mother comes to school and wonders why Johnny is having trouble, and the hapless administrator must try to explain things as tactfully as he can. A school administrator's hours are long, and sometimes his praises are few, but he takes pride in a school system which is efficiently handled. We of the staff feel that this year's administration deserves a bit of thanks for all they have accomplished for E.H.S. They have, through their efforts, brought many improvements which will benefit the students, as well as everyone involved, for years to come. 4 OFFICE GIRLS Superintendent's Office: Judy LaRue, Jean Evans, Suzanne Damron. As freshmen, we began with a bang as our float took top honors in the Fall Festival Parade. Our grades were good that year, as they have been since. As sophomores, we gave the Fall Festival their prettiest queen yet, Judy LaRue, escorted by Keith Palmer. Our junior year was our fun year. Our basketball boys were gaining experience as starters on the A team. Our class's boys led the Parliamentary Procedure s. But--the best yet to come. We decided to gild the nior year our best yet. STANDING: Sgt. at arms, Arlin Mackey; Secretary, Marcia Hill; Vice President, Marshall Foster. Almost Seniors! The Juniors have almost reached the goal they all covet: the completion of their high-school days. As freshmen, Cathy Ogden and Richard Beauchamp captured for their class the coveted yearbook King and Queen titles. This was well deserved. The fates were not kind to the kids as a whole, however. Other honors have eluded their grasps through the trickery of fortune. Nonetheless, these kids have spirit enough to liven things up around E.H.S., and they make it fun for us all. As Seniors, they'll surely govern the fine halls in the proper manner. Here's to the bubbling enthusiasm, perpetual ecstacy, and sunshine they spread in their paths. BE GOOD, CLASS OF '66! 27 Ballman, Patty Beauchamp, Richard Becker, Earlene Behle, Rosanna Brumagin, Jo Ellen Burd, Linda Carlyle, Fay Colbert, David Cordsiemon, Ronnie Davis, Karen DeGerlia, Jeannie Dickinson, Laura Evans, Penny Foster, Marshall Galloway, Diane Gourley, Jane Hemmer, Terry Hill, Marcia Humphrey, Mike Johnson, Jeffrey 28 Kerpash, Rita Locklin, Wanda Lovelace, Carol Mackey, Arlyn Mills, Billy Morris, Roger Ogden, Cathy Parker, Michael Pratt, Martha Rasmussen, Gary Scott, Eddie Stewart, Garry Taylor, Betsy Wells, Carolyn Wilkinson, Ron SOPHOMORES CLASS OFFICERS SEATED: Treasurer, Sara Waters; President, Rita Downing; Secretary, Janet Peacher. STANDING: Sgt. at arms, Gilbert Watts; Vice President, Doc Wilson. At last! The class of '67 is finally becoming a little bit oriented as to the ways of high school. They are mixing in well to form functioning parts of the institution. Typical freshmen as Judy Horton and Gilbert Watts came out on top in the Fall Festival coronation and their float won first prize in the parade last year. As sophomores, the class has already produced the Chapter Sweetheart at the Barnwarmin'; Sara Waters. It's in the cards for these whiz kids to really go places. We forecast for a good school career for the sophomores. 30 Hasten, Joan Hensley, David Downing, Rita Galloway, Cindy Barron, Jerry Cash, Brenda Gladney, Bob , Judy Hare, Forrest .4 Houston, Fran Miller, Elmer Ricks, Donna Rockwell, Vernon Steavenson, Hugh Steward, Sam Peecher, Janet Rogers, Tom Tannehill, Phyllis Ray, Theresa Slaughter, Jeannie Tapley, Dean FRESHMEN SEATED: Vice President, Steve Gray; President, Steve Bagley; Secretary, Diane Tapley. STANDING: Treasurer, Bill Whyte; Sgt. at arms, Arnold Blair. Adding their own distinct shades of green to the decor of good old E.H.S., little freshmen unsteadily swaggered into the hallowed halls in the same manner each new crop annually appears. They got off to a good start with the selection of Janice Teasley as Fall Festival Queen. But what of the future? Time will tell. On May 14, 1964, the world mourned the loss i of one of its greatest citizens of this century. In honor of the late Clarence Cannon, Presi- J dent Johnson and many other dignitaries came to Elsberry for the funeral ceremonies. Elsberry was really on the maps. People came from everywhere, near and far, to pay homage to the deceased Congressman and to see the | high officials who arrived in such large num- f4 bers. The First Baptist Church was the scene of the funeral itself, and people crowded the area. Secret servicemen, reporters, photogra- phers by the score, and helicopters all added to the color of it all. Yes, it was a great day for Elsberry, even tho.ugh she lost the greatest man she had ever produced. V. • -'.' '. - SL U 53 ±fi9 . r
