Two additional OH-5 8's participated during the middle of the exercise, raising the overall helicopter total to five operating from a guided-missile frigate that is designed to carry only two Navy helicopters. While conducting multiple daily and nightly missions, the 4'Aces of Detachment Four and the Army detachment were able to develop skills and tactics which will help forge a path for future joint operations .The combination of the Navy's SH-60B surveillance capabilities and the night- fighting ability of the OH-58's made for an impressive team. On Dec. 19, 1995, Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron Light CHSLJ 48 's Detachment Four, embarked aboard the USS Elrod CFFG-551, reached the halfway point of their Middle East Force 4-95 deployment.. Detachment Four's SH-60B helicopter, 4'Venom 507, has flown more than 360 hours . This total includes 122 day and 101 night landings. Three of Detachment Four's pilots have reached the 1,000-hour mark of mishap free flights time. Detachment Four and Elrod are conducting maritime interception operations in support of U.N. sanctions against Iraq. Working in conjunction with a multinational force comprised of ships from Belgium, New Zealand and Italy, Elrod has been involved with querying, boarding and escorting sanctions violators throughout the Arabian Gulf. Venom 507 has been tasked heavily throughout this period. '1It's a different pace and mission than I' m used to,', said Detachment Fourls Petty Officer lst Class Dale Lingle, whose 'tprimary job is to keep the helo flying. In between underway periods, Elrod has participated in two multinational exercises and, recently, a joint exercise with the U.S. Army.
