Life with the UNITS Parents Weekend: for two days each fall, the campus springs to life as parents from near and far descend. During the weekend, parents meet with faculty advisors to check their son or daughter ' s progress. They also are treated to a picnic, a talent show, and a football game. For students, Parents Weekend means cleaning their rooms so maybe they ' ll be treated to din- ner off campus or a shopping trip to the outlets. At left, parents get a chance to visit their son over a box lunch on the patio. The Elon Jazzmen, winners of the Talent Show, dazzled the audience and the judges. a part of LIFE ACADEMICS A different kind of learning A college education is not what it used to be. Today ' s college curricu- lum includes experiential education, internships and travel opportunities. At Elon, the Study Abroad program is becoming more popular with each year that passes. Trips to London, the Soviet Union and Spain offer stu- dents opportunities to learn what cannot be taught in a classroom. It ' s a different kind of learning, says Chaplain Richard McBride, who accompanied a group of students to Mexico, where they spent Winter Term building a church community- medical center. Travel offers lessons in history, geography, humanities, and the arts. And those who have participated in Elon ' s Study Abroad programs say it offers the opportuni- ties of a lifetime. Lectures, research papers, mid- terms and finals always will be the mainstay of a college education. But gravel opportunities add the spice. 20 A Part of Life Making friends in IVIexico Learning can take many forms, as students who traveled to Mexico for Winter Term found out. Ten students and two faculty members traveled to Reynosa, Mexico to build a bridge of friendship. While in Mexico, the stu- dents bunked in a church while helping the local citizens build a community center. The students spent Winter Term wielding shovels and paint brushes in- stead of books and pencils. According to the participants, it was hard work, but the lessons they learned and the friendships they formed made it all worthwhile.
