The Rituals of College Life The life of a college student is packed with the routines of dai- ly living: waking to a noisy alarm, crawling out of bed, sift- ing through the closet for some- thing to wear, walking to class or fighting for a parking place and somehow managing to be in your seat before the lecture be- gins. After classes, poverty or ex- treme hunger entices many stu- dents to lunch in one of the cafe- terias. Others congregate at Har- dees or Brown and Co. for a more impressive meal. After- noons are filled with activity: napping under the oaks, being absorbed by Erica ' s machina- tions on All My Children; enjoy- ing the early commencement of happy hour at Dewars, partici- pating in an intramural game, preparing for an evening of meaningful social interaction, and perhaps a stolen hour or two of diligent concentration in the stacks of the library. These are the rituals of daily life at Elon. New Oaks in Process Finally the new Oaks are nearly finished. It ' s too bad a new parking lot didn ' t come with the deal. The filming of Rituals . . . Hollywood Comes ELON This summer while many stu- dents were away, Hollywood found its way to the Elon cam- pus for the filming of the soap opera Rituals . Such stars as Monte Markham and Joanne Pflug were part of the cast of the new daytime drama about a Southern all girls school — Had- don Hall. The Elon campus was the perfect setting for the new show and the filming, which brought much attention to the campus. Students volunteered as ex- tras and found themselves bak- ing in the summer sun in order to look rich and glamourous for one particular scene of the show. Elon ' s campus was just what the producers of Rituals had been looking for. After a long se- ries of negotiations, Elon was disrupted by the cast and crew for a ten-day period of filming. The crew set up headquarters at the Ramada inn and filming be- gan. The F. D. Hornaday home, near Snow Camp, was the loca- tion used for the graveyard scene and a local textile plant agreed to serve as the center of the Chapin family wealth. After all the plans were finally worked out, the filming itself be- gan and the director was heard shouting ' ' Quiet on the set. Please ! Film speed! Go! The Rituals had begun.
