A Year RITUALS The year began as any other Freshmen arrived first, greeted by the friendly orientation staff. Suitcases, crates, refrigerators, televisions, stereos, and all the usual stuff kids bring to college quickly filled the dorm rooms. Next came the upperclassmen — who brought considerably less than the freshmen. Experi- ence had taught many that the third floor was quite a hike and unless you were training for the Olympics, it was not necessary to over load for the return trip to Elon. License plates from New Jer- sey, Maryland, Florida, Virginia, South Carolina, and other faraway places joined those from North Carolina, and the parking lots quickly overflowed, especially the Oaks where it was often necessary to cruise in search of a vacant spot. After a few trips to the cam- pus shop and Holy Hill Mall for supplies and so forth, many stu- dents settled in and began the process of registration and all the line-standing necessary to begin the semester. Many ener- getic students became reac- quainted with Dewars and the Lighthouse hoping to see old friends and meet new ones! A line stretched outside Brown and Company and the streets of Elon College had filled with stu- dents once again. The Rituals were about to begin.
