Going beyond the brick walls Introducing mom and dad to professors at the parents ' recep- tion . . . sitting in the silence of the worship service . . . lining up amid the chaos in Whitley ... a last walk through Alamance Ro- tunda, across Scott Plaza and down the brick wall lined with faculty members . . . sweltering through the ceremonies in the gym . . . then hugs and tears and trying to find the words to say thank you and goodbye. These are the rituals of an Elon Com- mencement — and the 1984 ver- sion had them all. From paying the graduation fee and ordering caps and gowns to addressing and mailing announcements, preparation for the final day began early. For many it was a happy time — the culmination of many years of hard work, studying, papers and tests. Some considered it a final pay-off for ail that hard work. For all it was the beginning of life in the real world beyond the brick walls. The ceremony itself featured Thad Eure, N.C. Secretary of State and Chairman of the Board Marching Toward Success. The graduates are marched toward Alumni Gym to receive those long- awaited degrees. A Final Hug. These girls share a few moments of sentiment before they go separate ways. Now Remember . . . Dee Dee reminds Ron to keep in touch and behave himself. of Trustees at Elon. He intro- duced the commencement speaker, William John Bennett, Chairman of the National En- dowment for the Humanities Afterward tears filled the eyes of many. How do you say good- bye to those who have meant so much in your life?
