CONCERTS Linda Rondstadt: The concert that almost wasn ' t A mere week before she was to appear in Elon ' s Memorial Gymnasium, Linda Ronstadt was only a rumor on campus. That week promised to be one of the busiest and most anxious for Entertainment Committee Chairmen Rick Coradi and Jay Tutwiler. Having finally completed the negotiations for the contract, they had much to do in preparation for the concert that Wednesday night, October 22. There was very little time to publicize the concert, it was on a weekday night, there were certain conditions of the contract to be met, and Linda Ronstadt herself was an unknown factor. A successful advertising campaign started the wheels in motion, as efforts to meet contract requirements for a fork lift and operator, stage equipment, and items such as three cases of Michelob beer, two bottles of Liebfraumilch, and various other expensive wines, were carried out by the night of the concert. Things seemed to be going smoothly, when five minutes before she was to go on, Ms. Ronstadt declared that she felt that she and her band members had been harrassed by the Security and Police backstage. Therefore she did not feel she should perform. Apparently there had been a misunderstanding as to why one member of her band was seized and searched. Fortunately, tempers were cooled and Linda Ronstadt strolled onto stage and captivated the audience almost immediately with her smooth, mellow, dynamic voice as she sang hits such as Heat Wave and Your ' re No Good. Prior to Linda ' s performance Goose Creek Symphony, with a major change in personnel, continued on their way to high energy country rock. Andrew Gold added to the fine entertainment which rounded out the concert that almost wasn ' t. The S.G.A. provided us with other big names during the course of the year. Howard Gray, Entertainment Chairman in the Spring of 1975, brought us such names as Elvin Bishop and Ozark Mountain Daredevils for the Spring Weekend crowd. Emmylou Harris added a country touch to round out that weekend. A concert this past Fall which proved to be a disappointment in attendance but not in performance was the Whiz Kids. Despite the meager crowd of less than 75, they remained enthusiastic and energetic throughout the concert. 27
