Character is that quality of a person which gives him depth, separates him from the plant world, and in some cases makes him great. Dr. Richard M. Haff has such a character. His unselfish service, friendliness, and sincerity are remembered by all who know him. He served Elon with a spirit, devotion, and loyalty, that will forever remain an integral part of Elon. We of the 1964 PHI PSI CLI are proud to pay tribute to a man who has meant so much to our college. His face may not still be with us as we enter and leave these college walls, but his memory shall remain forever.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT TO THE CLASS OF 1964: Congratulations! You have completed the required course of study and are a college graduate. During these years of study your Alma Mater has been deeply interested in you as an individual. We believe in the almost infinite worth of the individual and are dedicated to the proposition that we can and should help each individual student to grow and develop to the limit of his potential. Recently Dr. William DeVane, former dean at Yale, speaking of the liberal ai-ts colleges referred to the liberal studies as the studies which . . . mature and ripen the mind and character of man, that activate his imagination, lengthen his perspective . . . and give his life direction and puii)ose. We agree with Dean DeVane that these are results of education in the liberal arts. We believe that this is even more likely to happen when the liberal arts college is a Christian college. Elon College is a liberal arts college and it is a Christian college. Wei are convinced that this indication of our educational philosophy and this affirmation of our religious faith are essentials of the kind of education which will make possible that growth and development of the individual which we seek. As you go forth from our campus to places of employment or for graduate work, keep these twin goals in mind : the develop- ment of your intellectual capacity and the strengthening of your faith. Both of these are life-long processes. Both result from a consistent, conscious attempt on the part of the individual. Both are necessary if you are to be what you as an individual have the potential to become. May God richly bless you with opportunities to be of service to Him and to your fellowman, and may you so prepare yourself as to be ready to undertake whatever He calls you to do. Sincerely yours, J. E. DANIELEY President
