FOUNDERS ' DAY North Carolina ' s Governor Hodges addressed alumni and friends of Elon College at the annual Founders ' Day, Monday, October 15, 1956, as Elon College launched a million-dollar fund- raising campaign. Along with his tribute to the founding fathers, the speaker also paid special and personal tribute to Dr. Leon E. Smith, Elon ' s president, who is winding up a full quarter cen- tury of successful service to the school. There was a special tribute to the Christian church, the college trustees and alumni and friends for the support that has made possible the expansion in recent years. Following the announcement of the new Elon fund drive, there were brief talks by a number of alumni and friends of the college, each of whom brought greetings and well wishes for the new campaign from special groups. 1 L
