resident ' s message THE CLASS OF 1957 When you entered Elon College four years ago, doubtless graduation seemed a long, long way off, but as you look back across the years and relive some of your experiences, time has a way of shortening itself. Today wth diploma in hand, you cast a wishful eye into the future. It may be additional schooling for advanced training, it may be business or profes- sional services or it may be the btiilding of a home and planning definitely for the future. Whatever your plans and hopes may be, Elon College is proud to have had you as students for your undergraduate work and to have had the privilege of making contributions to your lives which we trust may bear abundant fruitage for the good of society as the years come and go It has been a pleasure to work with you. You have been good students, cooperative and helpful in all campus affairs. You have helped to raise the standards of Elon College. Elon College is a better college because you hove been its campus and its classrooms. May knowledge, wisdom and truth be your possessions in hand and may the unfailing light of God guide you all the way through life. L E. Smith President

Dr. Leon Edgar Smith Mrs. Leon Edgar Smith DEDICATION When loving service extends beyond all duty, when love of labor teams with Christ- ian purpose, when lives become dedicated to the improvement and growth of a noble ideal — then original words become inade- quate for praise. To justly describe the place our dedicatees have mode for them- selves in the life and progress of our college, we must grope for quotations from the pens of the great. Labor: Two are better than one, be- cause they have good reward for their labor. The labor of the righteous tendeth to life. Service: Make them to be numbered with the saints in glory everlasting . . . whose service is perfect freedom. How well in thee appears the constant service of the antique world, when service sweat for duty, not for meed! With love, respect and astonishment that we shall soon lose them, we, the class of 1957, dedicate this annual to Dr. Leon Edgar Smith, Sr., our president, and Mrs. Smith, our assistant president, for twenty- six years of service lovingly rendered beyond all duty. in grateful recognition
