Clem Mrs. Betty Bowman PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE In this fast moving, 20th century era, can your attitude towards learning and mastery of subject mat- ter be compared to that which your beloved parents and grandparents had at your age? Are you curious about things? Do you ask questions and seek out ans- wers from those whom you know can help you? High schoolstudents have lots ofquestions. They also seem to think they have all the answers, many times. Ta.ke care not to hide behind this false security. Your teachers and peers are constantly looking for the best in you and rejoice when they see your accomplish- ments. Your school seeks at all times to discover your hidden potentials. Give it a chance! Someone has said, Education is emancipation from herd opinion, self mastery, suspended judgment, urbanity. A LIB- ERAL EDUCATION frces the mind from the servitude ofthe crown, and vulgar self interest. How wellwill you be able to fit into this formula? Most any boy can tell you how many pounds he can lift or how fast he can run fifty yards, but rare indeed can one be found who has any conception of his intell- ectual muscle. Most young people have no idea of their great po- tential. There are countless numbers who stand at the edge of learning, but who do no more than go through the motions of getting it-maybe just stick in a sam- pling toe. Where are the adults who are saying to the youth of today, You are better than you think you are. You can be a doctor, lawyer, clergyman, physicist, engin- eer, teacher, philosopher. There is a college for you. Lift up your sights. That is the great stillness in ed- ucation today. Kenneth S. Clem
