Text from Pages 1 - 72 of the 1987 volume:

Timothy Wayne Heaps Jeffery Lee Heaps Mr. Echtenkamp said it best at a pep rally this Fall. Sometimes we forget to or neglect to tell people how much we love them and appreciate them ... Then all of a sudden they are gone or the moment is gone forever. A car train accident in May, 1986 took that moment for many of us. Tim and Jeff Heaps left Elmwood with their family for Hickman, Nebraska during the 1984-85 school year. They had been classmates, teammates and friends for many years. We saw them often at District basketball tournaments and other events — sharing once again moments — exciting and or disappointing. Happy, caring friends that we thought we would have forever. This yearbook is dedicated to their memory. Halls were decorat- ed, as were the locker rooms, restrooms, doorways, and even the cafeteria. Stu- dents dressed as Great White Hunters on Monday, turned their clothes inside-out for Tuesday, came as Halloween creatures on Wednesday, as College Preppies on Thurs- day and as well-dressed Elmwood students on Friday. The big day was Friday, when the senior girls. Pep Club officers and members spent the day decorating the gym for the dance that evening. All the effort and en- ergy paid off when Elmwood Pirates rose up and defeated Table Rock! SPIRIT WEEK A HUGE tree was brought to fuel the Bonfire for the night pep rally prior to game day. Football team members searched for items to increase the blaze. Pep club mem- bers made a Table Rock dummy to be tossed into the flames. Spirit Week participants agreed that it was the greatest one in many years. HOMECOMING ROYALTY 1986 Decorated in blues, white and sil- ver, the gym seemed to shout, PARTY . Pep Club members made a gazebo, with balloons and paper flowers in shades of blue and white, highlighted in the center of the floor. King, John Oehlerking, and Queen, Lisa Lannin, were chosen from the Royal Court which also in- cluded Brad Backemeyer, Ellen Behrends, Brian DeGarmo, Tracy Hanshaw, Mark Rase and Shelly Stewart. PIRATE FOOTBALL 1986 STYLE This year's team had something to prove. The 1987 seniors had not worked hard for three years to have their chance for the playoffs taken away. Many peo- ple believed that the '86 team would not do very well; that they also would not even have enough players to scrimage. The team of '86 had a different idea — they were not going to give up! They were not going to give in! They proved that they had something worth while. This year's team was intense; right from the start, they fired out with four con- secutive wins. By the seventh game, they had captured the Conference trophy. The next game was tough; unfortunately Elmwood lost. To the team of '86, good was not enough; they had to be better, Why be 5-4? The team worked extremely hard preparing for the last game. Once again, they had something to prove, — to themselves, to the school and to the coaches. For the past eight years, Adams had won that last game. This year, it was going to be different. This year Elmwood was going to end the season with a win, . .. No matter what it took. Those 24 players and three coaches worked like they never had before. IT PAID OFF . .. WE WONII! Nothing felt better than to know that you are a success. This year, the team of '86 got the sweet taste of victo- ry. They will never forget how it feels to be on top. They also performed the court case for the stu- dent body (some of whom made up the jury). In both instances, the rul- ing was for the plaintiff. Playing more of a full-court game (by pressing and fast-breaking when possible), they dazzled their opponents with balanced scoring and team defense. By beating highly ranked C-2 Johnson-Brock in the opener, everyone knew it was going to be an exciting season. The girls re- mained undefeated, until C-2's 5 rat- ed Lincoln Christian came to the Elm- wood Holiday Tournament, giving Elm- wood their first loss (44-41) in overtime. Two weeks later, they got another shot at L.C.S. and this time came out on top 44-40! Now 14-1, the Lady Pirates headed into the Conference Tournament looking for their first championship trophy. Johnson-Brock, however, came from behind to send the Lady Pirates to the consolation game in which they de- feated Odell 50-30 for third place. Soon after came District Tournament Time, which matched 2 rated Adams against 5 Elmwood. The Lady Pirates fought a tough battle; but came up just short, losing 39-28. Graduating will be Shelly Stewart, Lisa Lannin and Ellen Behrends. Shelly and Lisa scored 683 and 460 points respectively during their high school careers. The Lady Pirates will also be losing Coach Novak, who has decided to step down in order to spend more time with his family. During his coaching ca- reer at E.H.S., he turned the girls' bas- ketball program around. With a 5-12 re- cord his first year, a winning tradition began, compiling a 53-13 for his last three seasons. Posting a 19-3 record this year. PIRATE PRIDE The Elmwood Pirates finished 11-10 on the year. High ex- pectations of the Pre-season No. 5 rated Pirates were soon shot down when the No. 2 rated Sterling Jets gave the Pi- rates their most decisive loss of the season, 71-45. The Pi- rates, however, regrouped and won the next 5 games. The Holiday Tournament, which seeded Elmwood against C-2 (No. 1 rated) Bellevue Christian, had EHS playing one of their best defensive games of the year. They defeated Bellevue 50-48 in the first round, and then had to prepare for No. 5 rated Lincoln Christian. Again the team played well but fell just short, losing 67-65 in overtime. In the Homesteader Tourney, EHS faced No. 6 rated Nema- ha Valley; this loss gave the Pirates an 8-7 record. Splitting the next four games, they sported a 10-9 record for the season. Heading into the District, the Pirates had high hopes of pulling off the big upset. After beating N.C. Lourdes 75- 47, it was time for them to prove themselves. Elmwood gave the No. 2 rated Sterling Jets a scare as they led by 5 in the 3rd quarter, but fell behind by 7 late in the 4th. They relied on their defense to keep them in the game, but could pull no closer than 2 points, losing 44-41. Brad Backemeyer, Mark Rase, Jesse Rust, and Scott Shep- ard (all members of the 1985 State Runner-up Team) will be graduating this year.
