The seniors made use of their time in many different ways. Some sun bathed, while others rented paddle boats and made their way down- stream. One group of paddlers had to be towed back because the water was too rough for them to make it on their own. And unfortunately for the sun bathers, they suffered sun burns. The group activities were a lot of fun. The go-carts and bumper cars were only a couple of the high points. The seniors also went on an evening cruise aboard the Tom Sawyer. They danced to a live rock band and met many other seniors. After an enjoyable weekend, the seniors started towards home around 3:00 Saturday night. The nineteen seniors were only sorry that Jeff Vogt missed the fun. He qualified for the state golf tournament and missed the trip. 15 Those Can Conquer 16 Junior attendants - Becky Nekolite. Brad Larsen Salutatorian • Nyla Wohlbrandt Valedictorian - Becky Hill Who Believe They Can After 13 years of climbing, the Seniors finally reached their peak, graduating on May 16. 1982. The evening began as each member of the class marched in to the strains of Pomp and Circumstance.” led by Junior Attendants Brad Larsen and Becky Nekolite. The sermon was delivered by Rev. Russell Mead and the main address was given by Dr. Anne Campbell, state commissioner of education. Salutatorian was Nyla Wohlbrandt and Valedictorian was Becky Hill. The seniors showed their musical talent as they played with the band and the Senior girls sang May the Good Lord Bless and Keep You.” after which each girl presented a white rose to her mother. Scholarships were awarded by Mr. Jan Kuxhausen and then the big moment arrived as the diplomas were handed out by Mr. Francis Seiker. president of the school board. After the tassels were moved. 20 graduates filed out and the memorable evening ended as 20 caps were flung into the air. 17 CO • • • • • • • • ........•. . • • • • • ••• ••••••• ••i • • • • • • •••••••• •••••• • • • • • • ••••••••••• •••••••••••i • • • !•••••• • ••••«•••••a • • • • • ........•. •••••••• • • • • • ••• ••• • •••••••• :•••........ • • • • •• v •• • • ••••••• • V M V • .•; • • _• • • • • • • • • Roger Ackley Laura Arnold Michelle Barnard Jayme Christie Bob Corum Kathy Fischer Russ John Brad Larsen Pam Mueller Becky Nekolite Lori Nickell Joy Snyder Rick Spaulding Bob Thomsen Ronda Ulmer Curt Wilhelm JUNIOR CLASS SOPHOMORE CLASS Linda Behrends Mira Bogenreif Tim Callaway Dedra DeGarmo John Fergerson Linda Nickell Phil O’Brien Bev Pinkerton Kendra Pointer Dan Spiering Kurt Stewart Sue Stubbendeck Brad VandeHoef Gary Vogt Kristi Wendt 21 Not pictured: Brad Douglas and Dennis Scott FRESHMAN CLASS Jeff Albers Roger Behrends Ron Bolejack Rick Brummer Clay Christie Rod Cline Teresa Drake Betsy Hoyt Tracey Jicha Angie John Keelan Kaiser John Lannin Shari Leroy Julie Miller Mike Pierce Tim Rorie Sarah Smith April Snyder Tom Spaulding John Spiering Lisa Spiering Troy Thierstein Carrie Thomsen Missy Zoz 22 Not pictured: Mike Heaps. From Byron to Superbrain. 2$ Our superheroes temporarily taped up. The all school play this year was a spoof of Star Wars”. Starraider - alias Pierre the chef, and Deprava - alias Miss Broom the maid, plotted to over throw the world by keeping the super hero’s human. They planned to do this by feeding them cream chicken with a serum in it. The plan was undermined by a dessert of tapioca pudding. With the direction of Mr. Machal. the play was great fun and very interesting to watch. Lt. Bullhorn interogates the disguised superheroes. Starraider prepares for his evil deed. Tapeman. The play was a mystery in which a man has been killed. Through evidence considered to be Trifles two unlikely women figure out the crime. 30 SORRY WRONG NUMBER The Senior play this year was Sorry Wrong Number. After a shaky start, the play surprisingly came off quite well. Twelve seniors participated in the murder mystery about a poor, innocent woman who has a vicious crime planned against her. The woman is bedfast and the various conversations she has are all through the telephone lines. All in all everyone had fun doing the play. 31 Just about everyone got involved with this years Spirit Week: students and faculty participated. Punk rockers and cowboys emerged, while some took on a new kind of transportation and come to school in a tractor. The traditional spirit train after the bonfire wound it’s way through town and eventually ended up at Grandpa’s Woods. 33 RAINBOW CONNECTIONS 34 Deb Navrkal and Bob Brun Jolyn Gansemer and Steve Schreiner Lori Drake and Scott Rorie Above: Jayme Christie and Russ John Below: Tonja and Travis Hanshaw The first dance of the night. On October 10. 1981, Elmwood High School danced and swayed it’s way through the night to the music of Sounds Unlimited. Before the dance actually got underway, the event of the night had taken place. Steve Schreiner and Lori Drake were crowned homecoming King and Queen. But not all was as easy as it seemed. Tonja and Travis had quite a time with their trip to the stage. Eventually with a bit of coaxing, they made it. This was where Travis almost dropped the kings crown. When crowning time did arrive, Russ placed the crown on Lori's head, was giving her a congratulatory kiss and her crown fell. It was a night of firsts. It was the first time that the crown bearer’s were twins. And the first time the theme was sung by a muppet, Kermit the frog - no less. October 10th 1981 was truly a night for memories. 35 •••• THE JUNIOR CLASS of ELMWOOD HIGH SCHOOL Presents LEATHER AND LACE ELMWOOD HIGH SCHOOL Saturday Evening May I Nineteen Hundred Eighty Two WELCOME We would like to sincerely welcome each and everyone of you to the 1982 Prom at Elmwood High. Another year goes passing by. Another Prom is here. To some this brings a joyous smile, to others, brings a tear. For four years you have tread a path, from dawn to setting sun. But now the path gets steeper and the climb is just begun. We’re very glad to know you. We’ll miss you when you've gone. And to the Class of ’82. we dedicate our Prom. V Prom was a real exciting and enjoyable evening. The wills and prophecies were fun to write and listen to. The dinner ended around 7:00. Everyone had an hour to waste before the dance started at 8:00 in the gym. The music from Sounds Unlimit- ed filled the decorated gym of maroon and pink. This year's dance broke up early, as by 10:30 sponsors were the only people remaining with the music. 37 • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • ••••••••••••• • • •••••••• • • ••• •• • • ► • • ••• • • • • « • • ••••••• ••••••• • • •• • ••• • •• • • • • • • • • •••••••« • ■ • • • • • • • • • v • • I • • • • • • ) 9 • • • • • I • • • • • • • • • • • • • • ;v • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • :v • • • • 1 • • • • • i • • • • • • i • • • 1 • • I • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • V V • • • •• V • • • • • • V • • ••••••••••••••• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • ••••• • • • • • • • • • • « • • • • • • • - • • • • •••••••• • •••••••• • • • I • •••••••••••• • • • • • • • • • •• •• ••• • ; •• • • . •. • • • • • w • • • • • • • • ••• • •••••••••a • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • « • • • ••••■••a • • • • • • •••••••• • • ••••••• .......•. .•........... • • • • • m m • • •••••••a • • • • ••••••••••••• •••••••••• ......... .•............ • • • • •••••••• • • • •••••••• • •. • • • ••• ANNUAL STAFF Back row. The senior class helped out by selling annuals and advertisements. It wasn’t only the seniors who put in the hours. The entire staff pulled together. Changing sponsors three times didn’t slow the staff down. If anything, it made them work harder and more successfully. 40 STUDENT COUNCIL Back row: Linda Behrends. Teresa Drake. Kendra Pointer. SPIRIT TAKES ON A NEW FORM Five guys and their announcer, Curt Kopf, gave us one of the best pep rallies of the year. Ken Behrends, Mike Williams, Steve Schreiner, Bob Bruns and Scott Rorie showed us quite a performance as they cheered on the girls before their game in basketball districts. The event was kept secret, which made it the perfect element of surprise. They succeeded in doing the cheers, but they were done in a different manner than usual. 45 BAND Russ John, Mike Heaps, Matt Zoz, Mark Rase Dan Spiering, Steve Schreiner, Todd Kuenning Back row: Lisa Lannin. With 2 narrow losses to Dawson Verdon and Adams, the pirates had a respectable year as an inexperienced squad. Inconsistency hurt the young team as they would play well one game and not so well the next. The defense proved to be a strong point as they got blown out only once and played stingy defense against Adams (rated 5th in the state at the time). Offensively, the Pirates moved the ball well but failed to score when they needed to. Bob Bruns (defense) and Scott Rorie (offense) were elected as co-captains for the year by their teammates. Coach Monzingo guided the Pirate Volleyball team to a 10-7 record. The Pirates finished 3rd in the Homesteader Tourney, and were defeated in the semi-finals of the Peru Tourney by the Nebraska City H.S. in a tough two round match. When Districts came into the picture the Pirates again played the JB Eagles for the third time in the season, only to get their hopes brought down by a 3 set heart-breaker. They learned that winning isn’t everything but, fun is the name of the game. Also they learned about sports- manship and how important team work really is. First Team All Conference for the year was Becky Hill. Second Team was Deb Navrkal and Honorable Mention was Becky Nekolite and Pam Meuller. At one time during the season Becky Hill and Becky Nekolite led the State in leading blocks. 54 VOLLEYBALL: YOU BET! Coach Monzingo encouraged and explained the way to winning.
