« I PIRATE ELMWOOD PUBLIC SCHOOL Elmwood, Nebraska Kim Larsen and John Wenzel, Co-Editors 75 Pirate-Seasons In The Sun Goodbye to you, my trusted friend. We’ve known each other since we were nine or ten. Together we climbed hills and treee, Learned of love and ABC’s Skinned our hearts and skinned our knees. We had joy; we had fun. We had seasons in the sun. But the hills that we climbed were just seasons out of time. Dawn. The sun bursts over the horizon. A while later the alarm clock rings, beckoning us to another day of school. No matter the season the “good old school’’ was always there with the people that made it, and our world, go. These past four years high school and all its’ activities were certainly a big part of our lives, whether our interests lie in sports, music, or drama. Even more important than our classes and activities were the people who shared them with us. Going on to the next class didn’t seem so bad. knowing your friends would be there too. And not only our fellow classmates but the teachers who usually did their best to make the class fun and interesting while making sure we learned something. High school is a time for growing. We are in the process of becoming adults and are saddled with responsibilities and we suddenly realize we must live up to expectations. Not only expec- tations of others but more importantly expectations that we ourselves decide we want to live up to. It is a time for setting goals and beginning the long climb for them. High school is a time of mixed emotions. Sometimes the thrill of winning a Tuesday night basketball game can be quenched by the realization that you’ve got to go home and study for three tests the next day. Or the feeling of frustration when all your school-work piles up that changes to a sense of accomplishment when you get it all finished and handed in. High school is indeed an important time in our life. That’s why we have this yearbook. Oh, we know we can’t stop time or capture memories on paper but we can capture pictures and words that will help stimulate our memories in years to come. Thinking back on our years at EHS we realize we did have a lot of joy and fun even when the sun wasn’t shining. Administration And Faculty School Board-Mr. Elmer Vogt. Mr. Joe Williams, Mr. Ted John. Remember those who came in seventh period to make sure the sunflower seeds were out of the desks? How about those long bus rides home? He was the one we put our trust in. And Seniors, weren’t they fun to have along on our sneak trip? “Those”, “he and “they” were Babe and Eula Schwartzs, who have been with the school fourteen long years. The Seniors of ’75 wish Babe and Eula many more happy years ahead, wherever they’ll be. Thanks, a lot, for caring. 6 CLASSES Mark C. Stubbendeck Kathryn J. Missouri, for two and ' • days of sightseeing and fun. The morning of May ninth found us all on the bus before six o'clock ready to go. We arrived at K.C. early and spent a few hours at beautiful Crown Shopping Center before proceeding to the huge K.C. zoo. At the zoo. we suffered our first and only casualty: Deb was bitten by an ostrich, the little devil! (the ostrich, not Deb) We finished the day at a K-C Royals-Milwaukee Brewers BB game where we were treated to the sight of Hank Aaron hitting a home run! After a short night at the Holiday Inn. we were ready to tackle Worlds of Fun for a good part of Saturday. It was great and if we hadn't been so tired, we would have stayed longer............ Well, the rest of the trip went in style. We took ourselves out for a steak dinner at K.C’s Sheraton-Royale Hotel, but all too soon it was time to pack for home. We arrived back in Elmwood with enough time to take a long nap before making the trip to Baccalaureate. Sunday evening. 12 ‘The Sounds of Silence echoed by the Senior girls, provided entertainment at Commencement. Looking To The Future On Wednesday. May 14. 1975. the eleven seniors from the 1975 Senior Class gathered to say goodbye to the put and a hesitant hello to the future. Linda Steiner. Valedictorian and Kathy Vogt. Salutatorian. addressed their classmates, friends and relatives using the class motto as the theme for both speeches. Edward Schwartzkopf gave the main address to the graduates and told them to make the best for themselves. Someday we will all look back to our graduation and friends as part of the most important memories of our lives. Juniors Judi Pratt and Dale Enck escorted the Seniors in to Pomp and Circumstance. Salutatorian Kathryn Vogt speaks of looking to the future, while enjoying today and remembering the past. Valedictorian Linda Steiner warns her fellow classmates of what may happen in the future. Developmental Reading Our developmental reading classes follow the philosophy of meeting individual differences. We teach reading skills and concepts and then provide opportunities for the student to reinforce their skills by using them in interesting, meaningful situations. Our greatest concern is that our pupils acquire a good self-concept. -Mrs. Rosenow- 20 THE MESSENGER Serving Western Cass County ORGANIZATIONS Annual Staff’s Goal: To Get Done Assistant Editor: John Wenzel Editor: Kim Larsen “Are you going to get done? Student Council: New Leadership And New Activities Spyglass Focuses On Pirates For Another Year Elmwood's fifth year for student council was an attempt at money raising. Led by a new spon- sor, Mrs. Danley, and President Chuck Hansen, and other officers, the council held a Thanksgiving turkey raffle for the community. Besides proceeding their annual duties, such as choosing the following year’s assembly programs, the council raised $90.75, which will be used for the school or community. Queen Debbie Bornemeier and King Don Peterson were crowned by the Junior Class Attendants. Kathleen Vogt and Tom Hill. Crownbearers were Shelly Stewart and Johnny Oehlerking. After the traditional Royalty Dance, the Homecoming crowd danced to the sounds of the Schultz Combo. Kathleen Vogt and Tom Hill Homecoming King Don and Queen Debbie - 1974 Seniors Give “Funeral Tea” The class of '75 seems to be preoccupied with funerals. Last year their play was of a funeral and this year the senior play was about a tea after a cremation. The play, directed by Miss Foth, comes to life when the mourners think they are drinking the ashes of deceased Uncle Jacob which led to history on the Elmwood stage April 19. Miss Starkie D. Skirts Versus Blue Jeans How would you like it if your English teacher came to live with you? This is what was about to happen in the Junior's class play, “No Time For Skirts , directed by Mrs. Linda Anderson and given April 18, 1975. In order to cancel the English teacher's inten- tions of moving in, two of her male students—Bert, played by D. Enck, and Hank played by T. Hill—work up a marriage” plan. Meanwhile, Janie, a tom boy who prefers blue jeans over dresses, played by M. Seiker, is chosen May Queen. The play has a happy ending as the English teacher, played by C. Steiner, decides to live elsewhere, and Janie dresses up to make an impression on the teacher’s nephew, C. Hansen. Others: Janie's mother; J. Pratt; father: G. Dankleff; members of queen's court: K. Lannin, Karen Vogt. E. Gerry, and J. Nekolite: carpenters: R. Schweitzer and B. Wing. 31 That Rotten Day Which day could possibly be rotten out of 365' 4 days a year? For some it could have been November 22. This years play was “You Were Born on a Rotten Day , directed by Miss Foth. The catch to Sergei’s play was that the astrologer, Ptolemy, played by Kim Larsen was really the Physics teacher, also played by K. Larsen. Other cast: an English teacher, L. Steiner; Proncipal, K. Mrs. Mary Skalak was given the Freedom Foundation Teacher Award. She was the only Nebraska teacher to receive the award this year and one of 48 teachers in the country to be so honored. This year's outstanding actor and actress were Kim Larsen and Linda Steiner. Tom Hill and Linda Steiner were awarded the Jr. and Sr. mathematics awards. Cin- dy Steiner was recognized as the top scorer in the National Math Contest. Students with the highest grade averages in their respective classes were JoAnn Ackley. 7; Kenneth Jones. 8: Barb Wing. 9; Bruce Koehler. 10: Tom Hill. 11: Linda Steiner. 12. It was a summery night accented by good food and good music which was provided by the band. Essence. Pirates Go 3-5 The Elmwood Pirates with the coaching of Steve Brown Jay Wischmeier, concluded their season with a 3-5 record, somewhat below par for the Pirates. Although the record is somewhat misleading, there were a few Elmwood standouts. Led by the performance of All-State 2nd Team and All-State 1st team midgets, Mike Carter at defensive guard, and All- Conference back John Carter, and teammates John Wenzel and Lonnie Rorie helped spark the team’s three victories. The Pirates’ highlight of the season was their victory over a large Class C. Bobcat team which was a hard fought defensive game. Garnering the second place in Elmwood Invitational and third place at Mudecas, the team showed a lot of hustle and determination. The underclassmen gained valuable ex- perience which will be advantageous in years ahead. Many long hours were put into the season this year with improve- ment being shown each week. At the end of the season the team was looking forward to districts. To keep the winning spirit at Elmwood, future teams will continue to work and build pride in themselves and the school, which will show wherever they go. Five games were allowed the girls basketball teams last winter for experimental purposes. Practices were held to help the girls with technique in dribbling, ball- handling and shooting. The girls were coached by Steve Brown, who was tackling quite a task, in preparing the team for games against teams with much more playing experience. Teams faced and defeated this year were Murdock, Douglas, and Nemaha Valley; only Weeping Water and Louisville triumphed over the Pirates. By the end of the season quite an improvement was seen in all the girls, who are looking forward to a longer and better season next year. 44 Girls Repeat As District Track Champs FRONT ROW: K. Vogt.
