In presenting this 1955-56 edition of The Pirate we have endeavored to give you an everlasting picture of the life and activities, as well as the traditionsof Elmwood High School, We wish to express our grateful apprecia- tion to the advertisers who have made it pos- sible for us to have a yearbook in which to preserve memories of our school days. Editor.. z Ed... —f The following pages in this yearbook are here to reflect the faded memoriesof schooldays. When the hands of the clock have revolved over and over again, leaving their mark upon each and all of us, then will the pages of this annual picture a true reflec- tion of all the joys and sorrow, pleasures and hardships which were in reality, stepping stones on which we, step by step, have risen to Senior Distinction. What wonder then, when years of life have left our memories hazy, that this book shall reflect the past charms of youth and fellow-classmates. e Superintendent’s Message Congratulations to the staff and sponsor of this years Pirate . It is gratifying to note the time and patience you have used to make this annual an authentic pictorial record of your school life. May it bring back pleasant memories of a year that has helped to make each student a happier and more useful citizen. Many thanks to the faculty and students of the Elmwood School whose cooperation and school spirit have helped to make this a pleasant and profitable year. W. Hansen, Pres. M. Mendenhall, Treas. H. In the second grade, two pupils--Jean Bornemeier and Ronald Bishop--were added to this trio. The teacher for the two years was Mrs. Linder. Graduation exercises were held and five were promoted to the third grade. In the fall of 1946, three new pupils--Norman Brockhoff, Margaret and Virginia Cameron- joined the class. The instructor that year was Mrs. Miller. The following year there was a new addition, Duane Krecklow, and the same year Alvin Beniky and Ronald Bishop moved away. The teacher was Miss Merritt. During the fifth grade, six new pupils--Joyce Miller, Duane Ahrens, Marilyn Laughlin, Mary Jicka, DorwinKirchhoff, and Margaret Brunkow--were added to the class. The next year found all in the sixth grade with a few new pupils--Shara Doe- bele, Marilyn Byrd, and Rosalie Plunkett. The teacher during the fifth and sixth grades was Mrs. Voller. In the seventh year two pupils moved away; they were Marilyn Byrd and Dorwin Kirchhoff. Miss Monahan was the teacher dur- ing the eighth grade. Two new pupils--Royal Halvorsen and Dale Lannin-- enrolled that year making the class number fourteen. Grade school activities were completed and May graduation exercises sent the fourteen students to the doors of E. H. S. In the fall of 52 , four new pupils plus the thirteen eighth grade gradu- ates entered the halls of E. H. S. as freshmen. The new pupils were Dave God - bey, Marilyn Mendenhall, Donna Miller, and Carolyn Spohn. The high school faculty consisted of Mrs. Godbey, Mrs. Akert, Mrs. Mulnix, and Mr. Johns- ton. The highlight of this year was freshman initiation. In the sophomore year the class lost Rosalie Plunkett and gained Ronald Abrams., Mrs. Godbey, Mr. Mickelson, Mr. Johnston, and Mrs. Johnston were the teachers this year. The main events were ordering class rings and printing the Sophomore Chatter. In the Junior year Elmer Mueller joined the class. The teachers were Mrs. Godbey, Mr. Mickelson, Miss Hagemeister, and Mr. Ernst. Attending County Government, the Junior Class Play, and the Junior-Senior Banquet, were the main events of the year. The class lost one member--MargaretBrunkow. May, 1956, finds eighteen wise and worldly students leaving the confines of Elmwood High. The seniors have had many fun-filled and worth-while experiences during this year from freshman initiation to commencement. Teachers for their final year were Mrs. Godbey, Miss Hagemeister, Mr. Souchek, and Mr. Green- wood.
