BAND NEWS During the 1950-91 season the band has made considerable improve- ment. It consists of 31 members, including 19 high school students and twelve grade school students. This year the band has appeared at the Junior Class Play, Senior Class Play, Cass County Music Contest, and the District Music Contest. The band came through with high honors in both contests. Through the efforts of the Band Mothers, the band members received new jackets to complete their uniforms. This made a great improvement in the anpearance of the band members. This past year the band has acquired three new members. They are: Cheryl Miller, Carol Kunz, and Ned Totman. We know that the absence of the four Seniors will be greatly missed, but we are sure there will be others capable of taking t eir places. The uniforms they selected were blue scarves, white (short-sleeved) sweaters, blue skirts, and blue and white beanies. The cheerleader1 a uniforms were of reversed colors. Two members were chosen from each class to form a Pep-Club commit- tee. This committee carried on the business for the Pep Club. Those representing the classes were: Cheryl Miller, Dorothy Brakhage, Freshmen: Shirley Hall. Shirley Messelhiser, Sophomores; Marjorie Kirchhoff, Eleanor Brunkow, Juniors; Janice Rung and Frances Schick, Seniors. The Pep Club girl? sold apples, candy, pop-corn, peanuts, hot dogs and pop at the football games and the Tournaments. With this money they purchased warm-up pants for the basketball team. On February 22, the girls held a Valentine tea for the mothers of the High-School students. Thirty-one were present. Each mother was presented with a corsage. Four girls entertained the mothers with a short program. They were: Janice Kunz, Eleanor Brunkow, Dorothy Nannen and Joyce Eidenmiller. Immediately following, refreshments were served by the Pep Club Committee. From all favorable comments the Pep Club is planning to make this tea and annual affair. —14— ?2eu sj aj?el Left to Right: Janice Miller (Associate Editor), Norman Irons, Delores Staack, Clayton Linder, Janice Kunz, Sheroll Drake, Miss Norma Carlson (Sponsor), Frances Schick (Editor). HIGHLIGHT OF THE SEASON The highlight of the 1950-51 Football season was the game played at Nehawka. Chuck Backemeyer suffered a shoulder injury and was un- able to play. This made Elmwood fight harder to win the game for him. The team was sparked by the brilliant playing of John Thomas. Dudley Doebele, Delton Nannen, Keith Drake, and Murell McCoy. John Thomas sparkled in pass catching, he also blocked a pass for a ?Udley did a fine job of passing. Delton Nannen, haii t6 u’ an Murell McCoy each did a marvelous job of running the paix Luck, however, was against us and Murell McCoy broke his leg in the second quarter. With two of the first six out the going was tough but the agressive Elmwood team won out 22 to 0. —17— :football SCHEDULE Elmwood Elmwood Elmwood Elmwood Elmwood Elmwood Elmwood 36 Ceresco--------------------------6 •28 Liberty-------------------------6 12 Union-----------------------------2 6 -6 Nebraska Deaf--------------------51 •22 Nebawka-------------------------0 —0 Alvo---------------------------49 -6 Eagle---------------------------40 DADS DAY Dads Cay was another one of the features of the 1950-51 Football season. The game was played with Alvo but Elmwood came out on the short end of the score 49 to 0. Keith Drake suffered severe face injury and was unable to finish the season. Elmwood is going to make Dad's Day an annual occasion. FOOTBALL BANQUET At the conclusion of the football season a football banquet was held in the school cafeteria with all the school children and their parents invited. A delicious meal was cooked by Mrs. Stoval and Mrs. Elliot and served by the eighth grade girls. After dinner the honorary co-captains were named and these crowned the 1950 Football queen Janice Faye Miller. Coach Johnston gave a summary of the seasons events and presented the letters.
