THE ULMUS 23 what l Did Do When l Received One Thousand Dollars For Christmas AY back in the yea.r nineteen twenty-three when I was only a. fresh kid, I received the stupendous sum of one thousand dollars for Christmas. O-ne thousand iron men, all typified by a single litn tle sheet of paper. f The next day with a number ten hat band. and fifty-two chest I marched into the bank where The basis of my education was to be de- posited. It was early in the morning and the bank windows were open to air out the yesterdayfs. toibacco smoke. Airily Houncing out the winged wonder I was about to sign it when Wliooie! a gust of wind hand carried it out my reach and out into the street. This continued until he reached the erstwhile Schenck home -now domain of The Persiansf' The aforementioned feliness, scenting dog in the air, immediately opened a clawing atta-ck. Weenie, now fully occupied, dropped the c.hec.k and I bowed the tree down with a shout of joy only to see a mighty hawk suddenly swoop down and -carry off my prize, perhaps for a pigeon or some other white critter. The old bird then started for Kempville at about seventy per where my father Cpre-viously tipped off by telephonej awaited him. Upon his triumphal arrival he was dropped by a load of chilled and they fell di- rectly over our hog-house. A line Duroc then opened his mouth. and, see- ing the sky-swooper, swallowed him hook, line and sinker. Upon seeing those capacious jaws close I gave up all hope. Two weeks later we butch- ered and as I was cutting out a prize Durods ribs, I suddenly heard a crackle and there was my- CornieI You sleepy roughneck! Get up!
