The Social Studies Department has attempted to instill these qualities in the students of Elmont Memorial High School. American History and XVorld History are followed by a course in Problems of Democracy. Discussion and the use of newspapers and magazines are important facilities which are employed by the faculty to better acquaint the students with the problems of today. It has been the ambition of the English Department to help the students develop their reading habits, improve their creative writing and enable each student to obtain a well-rounded background in the lingual arts. We use individual and group reports, reading assignments, book reports, classwork, and homework whenever necessary. Through elective courses such as Public Speak- ing, journalism, and Creative VVriting, the students are given an excellent chance to broaden their scope of the English language. JR.
