Christmas Assembly The Senior Glass, on December 19, presented a very enjoyable Christmas program. James McGann acted as Master of Ceremonies. After a. few cordial words of welcome by the class president, James Sullivan, a religious tableau was presented. The part of the Blessed Virgin was taken by Madlyn Mclnerney and that of St. Joseph by Edward Gill. Then Mary Ruth Dunn renewed childhood memories by reciting 'Twas the Night before Christmas, during the course of which Santa Claus and his reindeer came dashing in. The main feature of the program, a play entitled 'N' Christmas Trimmingsf' was participated in by Frank Bonsignore, Peter Shields, Joseph Curran, Madeline Ruddick, Jane Grady, Frank Maloney, Betty Cloke, James Sullivan, Jean Reidy, Frances Hadden. Afterwards, gifts were distributed to the faculty and students by Santa Claus .fRichard Lagonegro sh-h lj. Father Burns closed the program by extending to us his Christmas wishes as well as bringing to our minds the religious significance of the season. 5? Wasbington's Birthday Assembly To celebrate VVashington's Birthday and Bill of Rights NVeek, the seniors presented at assembly on February 20 an interesting program. James Sullivan, president of the senior class, introduced the various numbers. After the Salute to the Flag and the singing of The Star-Spangled Banner' ', a one-act play, George W'ashington's Valentine' ', was given by Agnes O'Herron, Robert Ervin, Joseph Curran, Betty Cloke, Daniel Sullivan, Frank Bonsignore, and David Shay. Following the play Barbara Ann Romasser, a charming little sub-freshman from the fourth grade, recited Etiquette Then T. A. Daly's Little Giorgio Washiiigtoiii' was dramatically rendered by Patsy Bonsig- nore. Afterwards, something different took place. A group of senior boys enacted several scenes to show life under a dictatorship and what could happen here if it were not for certain Amendments. From these blood- curdling tableaux, the audience was made to realize its good fortune to be living in free America. This was followed by Lawrence Murphy's recitation of a short piece. Between numbers the school orchestra played and the students sang popular songs. After a few words from our principal, Father Burns, this very successful patriotic assembly came to a close with the singing of God Bless America and My Country 'Tis of Thee. Bonavenfure's Hosf To Young Journalisfs For the fourth consecutive year, the Clar- ion was awarded a silver trophy at the Annual School Press Convention held May 9 at St. Bonaventure 's College. Catholic High was well represented by a Large delegation. Nineteen students, accom- panied by Mrs. James Ruddiek and Mrs. Arthur Nolan, left Elmira early in the morn- SYRACUSE DELEG-ATES ing and traveled by bus to Olean. Through- out the day they enjoyed the contests, lec- tures, and informal discussions conducted by prominent figures in school and professional journalism. The crowning event of the day, however, to our students, was the awarding of first prize to the Clarion in the ininieo- gi-aphed paper department. Qratorical Contest On February 27 was held the annual oratorical con- test sponsored by the American Legion. The assembly opened with a prayer by Father Burns. After the salute to the flag and the singing of My Country 'Tis of Theen by the student body, Mr. Lawrence Hastings spoke on behalf of the American Legion.
