Some place I read, There can be tro life ivithout tradition, neither can there he any life without move- ment. Any college campus is the crossroads of tra- dition and movement with tradition likely to domi- nate movement. Now and then the reverse can and does happen. Perhaps 1953-54 will be remembered as one of the movement years, e.g., the Circle drive, the contagion of the Lecture Series that inoculated stu- dent groups to outdo one another in bringing in speakers, the illegal dash on South Hall, the renovat- ing of Irion Hall Assembly — even the faculty moved into the new apartments. But movement should signify direction just as tradition should conserve. May Elmhurst College students of 1953-54 conserve and move toward prov- ing all things, holding fast that which is good. GENEVIEVE STAUDT Dean of Students The purposefulness of Elmhurst students and fac- ulty permeates every aspect of our campus life. In general, each individual becomes aware of his re- sponsibility to the campus community, discovers an area in which he can make a creative contribution to Elmhurst, and works cooperatively with his peers. The effective manner in which the Student Union plans and directs the social activities is evidence of the mature quality of the student body. A deep, sincere interest in the welfare of every member of the campus family produces a genuine spirit of friendliness. Everybody seems to be willing and eager to exchange a friendly greeting, to lend a helping hand, and to share vital experiences with his neighbors. Christian fellowship abounds at Elmhurst. Thrice blessed are we who are privileged to work at Elm- hurst College. ALFRED FRIELI Dean of the College Registrar

From my vantage point I am privileged to see Elmhurst men and women out there . . . doing the world ' s work, and others on the campus preparing for their future use- fulness. They have much in common and through the years they develop similar Characteristics. Nearly all bear something of the Elmhurst stamp, an important quality of which is integrity. It is fascinating to watch this process of growth on the campus. Our students, exposed to wholesome influences, led by devoted teachers, surrounded by many noble-minded youths, inspired by tradition and idealism . . . become useful citizens, a credit to the school and an asset to the nation. Since many of our friends cannot observe this process we hope that these pages will reveal some of it. It is the story of a contagion, caught and spread, a contagion of mutuality and good will. May God prosper it. H. W. DINKMEYER 9
