Football The Ellsworth - Cokeburg football team enjoyed a successful season despite losing all but two lettermen the previous year, going through a stiff eight-game schedule, winning two games, and losing five, of which two were with double A schools, and tieing one. At the beginning of the season Ellsworth faced Charleroi as a curtain-raiser, with only eight days of practice available. Coach Holland built the entire eleven around John Ross and James Gauriloff, his two lettermcn. The local eleven was white-washed by a score of 5h-O. The outlook for the season looked dim but in the next encounter, they surpriseingly held the strong California team to a lone touchdown which was made in the last minute of play. The Cokers dropped their third contest to Jefferson High School by a 26-lh score. The E. C. gridders snared their initial win at home, by downing the East Bethlehem team by a score of 19 7o In the battle of the year, midst a steady downpour of rain, the local footballers beat the Bentleyvillo Bears by a score of 6-O. Leading the Belle Vernon eleven by 19 points with five minutes remaining to play, the local team was defeated by the score of 20-19. East Pike Run High and Ellsworth teams played a scoreless deadlock and in the final game of the season, the home boys dropped a one-sided battle to the Center- ville eleven by the score of 26-O. Coach Don Holland's material for the past few years has been poor, but the outlook for the 1938 foot- ball season looks the brightest since he came.
