STUDENT LIFE A NEW QTART The school year of 1978-79 started out great, beginning with a new principal, Mr. Caffee, the third in three years. He had a lot of enthusiasm toward improving our school. As a result of this, students had more spirit and a more willing attitude. HOMECOMING GPIRIT HIGH Spirit week started Monday, October 2nd, with boot day. Tuesday the stu- dents wore sunglasses and hats. Wed- nesday was overall and suspender day. Thursday they dressed backwards in red and blue. Friday completed the week with a dress-up day. The events built up to a bonfire that took place at the baseball diamond on Thursday evening, October 5th. Friday was highlighted by the crown- ing ceremony. The auditorium was filled with friends, family, students, and alumni. Following the assembly was the 1978 homecoming football game. The dance followed to the music of Boogie Fever. 7 YOU NEEDED ME Michelle Miller Jim Corbett Sheryl Hamm Kevin Joiner The crowning ceremonies for the 1978 football homecoming king and queen were held in the EHS auditorium on Friday, October 6 at 3 p.m. The king candidates were nominated by the foot- ball team and the queen hopefuls were selected by the student body. The theme of the ceremony was “You Needed Me . The master and mistress of ceremony were Josh Jensen and Janice Clair. After King Terry and Queen Shelly were crowned, Richard Kincaid sang the theme song, accompa- nied by Nancy Peter. The Var- sity team (A) was composed of Cheryil Lee, Shelly Scheufler, Pam Caffee, Amy Isern, Angie Miller, and Lisa Batchman. The J-V's (B) were an all sophomore team, and helped the JV boys to an undefeated season. The team was com- posed of Jean Fiest, JoEllen Klepper, Debbie Knop, and Theresa Peintner. Richard Kincaid won the 2 singles at the Sterling meet and placed second at Lindsborg. Lyle Stickney won the 1 singles at Ellinwood, placed second at Sterling, and third at Lindsborg and at the Regional. 24 Golf The EHS golfers finished their season with Gary Schartz and Brett Wells participating in the state meet. During the season, Schartz won 2nd medalist at the Russell meet and 1st medalist at the regionals. The two man team of Schartz and Wells placed 1st at Kingman, 2nd at Ellsworth, and 2nd at the Regionals. The four man team, made up of Gary Schartz, Brett Wells, Rich- ard Kincaid and Brad Urban, won 2nd at the Russell meet and 3rd at Ellinwood. Boys Track The boys 1979 track team consisted of nineteen members. There were five seniors, five juniors, six sophomores, and three freshmen. There were eight returning lettermen, Doug Stre- mel, Terry Barrow, Dennis McQuade, Randall Ame- rine, Kevin McCarty, Merle Scheuerman, Jason Ruckman, and Steven Mason. Head coach for the Eagles was Richard Harring- ton, assisted by Roger Stremel. The manager was Dan Stremel. 1979 SCHEDULE ELLINWOOD INV. FOURTH ST. JOHN INV. THIRD MEDICINE LODGE INV. SACRED HEART INV. THIRD CLAFLIN INV. SECOND G-W CLASSIC CPL (at Sterling) SECOND REGIONAL STATE Three Eagles have turned in outstanding perform- ances this year. Steve Maison placed first in the pole vault at Ellinwood and Claflin, second at Sacred Heart, and third at St. John, the G-W Classic and the CPL. Doug Stremel won the long jump at Sacred Heart, placed second at St. John, Ellinwood, and third in the 220 at the CPL. Terry Barrow placed second in the 120 yd. hur- dles at Claflin, Sacred Heart and St. John and third at Ellinwood. He won first at the CPL, setting a new CPL record. Terry also won the hurdles at the Regional and at the State Meets, setting a new school record of 14.65 seconds. 27 28 Girls Track The girls track squad, coached by Karen Snay, consisted of one fresh- man, Lorri DeWerff; four sopho- mores, Julie Parish, JoEllen Klep- per, Michele Doll, and Michelle Komarek; one junior, Sue Menges, and one senior Joyce Grant. They made signs and posters to be hung around the school, reminding each and every Eagle fan of the upcoming games. The Rockettes also composed the pep club at each game, and led by the cheerleaders, supported the Eagles in every way possible. 31 ■ tl Fellowship of Christian Athletes The Fellowship of Christian Athletes is sponsored by Mr. Larry Vogt and Mr. Robert Shandy. The officers are Kyle Zoellner, — Pres, Kirk Bressler, — Sec., Terry Schrepal, — Vice Pres. They meet weekly in various homes. Discussions are related to helping teenages cope with today’s problems. 33 34 American Field Service The Ellinwood AFS is sponsored by Robert Ashlock. This year the foreign exchange student is Miss Viveca Bengtsson, from Helsingborg, Sweden. Viveca is staying at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Russel Grant. The AFS also sponsored various school activities throughout the year, including Potpourri and D. FRESHMAN: Luke Feist and Kevin Hickle. 38 Latin and German Clubs This year’s Latin Club attended the 30th annual Kansas JCL Convention at Salina South High School, March 24. The group consisted of Janice Clair, Dana Burroughs, Jenny Siefers, Joyce Grant and Miss Moreland. They elected new state officers. Joyce Grant was the outgoing State Secretary. 39 The Art Department is under the supervision of Edgar Sturtz. He offers two classes, Art I II in which students can develop their talents in painting, ceramics, drawing, silkscreen printing and various other arts and crafts. 41 Vocal The vocal department of EHS was highlighted this year by a tour of the Madrigal Pop Choir to various schools around central Kansas, including Tipton, St. Johns of Beloit, Cunningham, Dorrance, and Greensburg. The director, Mr. Dave Evans, was pleased with the performances, as well as the reception they received at the various schools. 45 Hello, Dolly On November 20 and 21 Hello Dolly was presented in the Ellin- wood High School Auditorium. It was directed by Wilbur Hogg, David Evans and Leon Sobba. Together with the cast they had two success- ful showings. 6 Dramatics The dramatics department ended the 1979 school year with two presentations by the junior and senior classes. The junior class presented a comedy mystery, The Butler Did It, by Tim Kelly. This was a three act play with a cast of eleven. The seniors also presented a comedy mystery in three acts, Done to Death, by Fred Carmichael. The plays were directed by Wilbur Hogg and Leon Sobba. 47 Foreign Language Three foreign languages are offered at E.H.S. Mr. Wil- bur Hogg teaches Spanish I and II, and Miss Vickie More- land teaches German I and II, and Latin. 49 Business Education The business department offers a wide variety of courses. Mr. Larry Vogt teaches classes in General Business. Economics, and Accounting. Mr. Francis Flax offers courses in typing, shorthand, and office machines. Miss Snay also teaches one class of beginning Typing. 50 Debate The 1978-79 Debate team was coached by Mr. Wilbur Hogg. They attended 5 meets and did considerably well. The team was made up of six girls: Pam Caffee, Tracy Hatcher, Jeri Dreiling, Nancy Peter, Mary Tyler, and Janelle Sanko. All but two will be returning next year. 52 Speech The speech department is under the leadership of Mr. Wilbur Hogg. Three basic speech classes are offered, as well as advanced speech and debate. Students participate in various forensic festivals, including regional and state. This year, Ellinwood hosted the Central Prairie League Speech and Drama Festival. S3 English The English department consists of three instructors. Mike Westerman teaches freshman and basic English. C. J. Neelly in charge of English II, and Nancy Con- verse works with the upper classmen in English III, IV, and advanced placement. s 55 Math The mathematics department offers courses in three basic areas. Leon Sobba teaches Alge- bra I and general mathematics and Roger Stremel is in charge of Algebra II and geometry. 56 Social Science The social science department consists of American History, Constitution, Government, and geography. Larry Drees teaches Government, Vicki Moreland teaches world history, and Richard Harrington teaches Constitution and American History. 58 Home Economics The Home-Ec department is under the direction of Bette Tranbarger and Linda Sobba. Bette Tranbarger teaches crafts, food and clothing, and bachelor living. Linda Sobba teaches family living and home economics. 61 Industrial Arts The Industrial Arts Department features a broad range of courses. Howard Wallace is in charge of the vocational agriculture area, offering small engine repair, farm construction, and farm manage- ment. Fred Gunn, woodworking instructor, gives a broad background in tool usage and furniture build- ing. Lyle Sanborn teaches mechanical drawing and general metals. 62 63 Science The Science Department offers a wide variety of courses. Mr. Robins is in charge of biology. Mr. King teaches chemistry and laboratory science, and Mr. Sobba heads the physics department. 65 Journalism The journalism department is responsible for the two major publications of EHS. The year- book class has spent many hours organizing pages, as well as taking, sorting, and cropping pictures. The newspaper class pub- lished the Eagle bi-monthly, in cooperation with Ray Bachura of ScreenCo. Photography Edgar Sturtz has completed his year in teaching photography. He tries to teach the techniques in tak- ing good pictures and developing the pictures. This year's classes, composed of 18 seniors, have used these techniques in taking pictures for the school paper and yearbook. They have entered their work in Art shows at Wichita.
