This was the first time in recent years that EHS has crowned yearbook royalty. Other candidates nominated for the honor were Karen Fox, Roma Case, Darlene Allen, Dick Doll, Arnie Link and Don Veach. The crowning was the highlight of the Student Council sponsored Twirp Dance. Spacil Clowned tlomecominq Queen June Spacil, pretty sophomore, was crowned homecoming queen by King Richard Jenisch, athletic senior, to reign as the queen cho- sen by the football boys. The crowning was an event of October ll in the high school auditorium. The queen's attendants were Roberta Stevens, Carmen Graff, Judy Lebbin and Sandy Stacey. The attendants for the king were Clayton Schartz, Ronnie Rickert, Dennis DeWerff and Tom Schroder. The queen and her four attend- ants watched the evening football game from the traditional loca- tion of the throne on the west side of the football field. Upon investigation it was learned hat they were teachers from Guatemala h •— f The Eagle is published bi-weekly 8 by the members of the journalism class. At the beginning of the year the class elects a staff for both the 11 newspaper and the yearbook. The EHS newspaper carried news of activities and classes, editorials, f features and a choice column called Words for the Birds written by Linda Hayes and Dick Eberhart. Much of the work on the yearbook B was done at meetings of the class 8 in the evening. This was the day the seniors ordered the class of 6l to sound off the familiar yell, Yea, Ellinwood, beat Clay Center --the day in which the fresh- men drank all obtainable liquid and ate anything eatable between the choruses of the senior chant--the day in which the freshmen wore pinafores and little boy's knickerbockers gaily colored with lipstick and scented with the aroma of ammoniated perfume. The seniors predict that the class of 6l will be a hard class to beat! •- (WKl Part of the cast for East Lynne Karolyn Ames, Linda she r, Richard Wolfe Steve Kimple and Art Traugott YYlelodnama Pneiented Awand Made i ‘Jhe pia East Lynne, this year's Junior - Senior play, was presented in the auditorium on October 8 and 10. The comedy melodrama was complete with rinky-tink piano and olios between the acts. The cast: Joanita Triplett, Karolyn Ames, Judy Lebbin, Arthur Traugott, JoAnn Peter, Larry Wills, Evelyn Heckele, Bill Hallmark, Anice Hall- ford, Dick Wolfe, Linda Fisher, Steve Kimple and Lila Fildes. The pianist was Linda Hayes and Doug Schneider was assistant director. The annual awards called Ellies were given at the Shespian banquet on May 12. Best actress and actor were Lila Fildes and Duane Wilcox. Ann Holmgren and Larry Wills were honored for their supporting roles. These awards were for three-act plays Best actress and actor for the one- act plays were Judy Lebbin and Dennis Casey. Awards for supporting roles went to Linda Hayes and Art Traugott. Carmen Graff was selected best assis- tant director and Karolyn Ames was best crew member. . Samples ects One-Act Plaifi Ofjfien Vanietij Three one-act plays were presented by the Juniors and Seniors in place of the usual three act play. The cast for the play Com- ing Around the Mountain in- cluded Connie Warren as Daisy, Wally Jenisch as Zeke, Linda Hayes as Dynamite Ann, JoAnn Peter as Hortense, Imogene Meadows as Maw, Sandy Robinson as Millicent, Larry Manning as Carey and Tom Schroeder as Pop. Lois Wille was assistant director. The play Auto-de-Fe con- tained a cast of only two, a mother played by Joanita Triplett and her son, played by Duane Wilcox. Linda Fisher was assistant director. The third play, Man in the Bowler Hat, had in the cast Jim Roth as John, Nada Whet- stone as Mary, Bill Hallmark as Hero, Sandra Stacey as Heroine, Art Traugott as Chief Villian, Larry Wills a? Bad Man and Tom Schroeder as Man. Barbara Koch was chosen as assistant director. Coming Around the Mountain Auto-de-Fe Infanta cast: Doug Schneider, Dennis Casey, Steve Kimple Judy Lebbin and Lila Fildes. Unvited to Pundue I Birthday of the Infanta, Ellinwood's contest-winning one-act play for the past two years, was selected by the National Thespian Society for presentation at Purdue Univer- sity in June. The Thespians staged The Glass Menagerie to help pay for the trip. Best Thespians were named at the annual banquet in the little theater. e and Fildes —Leanninq to do, doinq to leann, anninq to liue, livinq to aenue. The Ellinwood Chapter of Future Farmers of America closed out their fifth year of accomplishment at the fifth annual parent-son banquet. There were twenty-seven members in the chapter and many of them participated in District contests with five going to the state contest in Manhattan. The FFA officers during the year were Dick Doll, president; Ed Schloc- termeier, vice-president;, Kieth Hammeke, secretary; Larry Petz, treasurer, Dennis DeWerff, reporter and Larry Sief rs, sentinel. Mr. Cragun looks over Gary Muller's trailer Some outstanding projects turned out during the year were an ensilage loader by Terry Kowalsky, a four wheel trailer by Gary Muller, a garden tractor by Don Knop, a V-plow by Allen Bryant, a cultivator by Llewellyn Doll, a work stand by Doug Schneider, a hydraulic press by Ron Bieberle, a bale elevator by Stanley Isern, a stock trailer by Larry Petz, Ron Bieberle and Ed Schloctermeier and a four wheel trailer by Terry Kowalsky. Don Knop and Stanley Isern use the well-equipped shop Kayettei Plan fro'i Betten School and Community Kayettes, an organization for girls, is sponsored by the Kansas Association for Youth. Kayettes is an organization that unites the girls thoughts and ideas for the betterment of the club. It is not only for the betterment of the school and girls, but also for the betterment of the community. The outstanding activity that the Kayettes sponsor is the Kayette formal. Roman Custom Studied Inf, Latin Club The Latin Club has been organized two years under the sponsorship of Mrs. Stitt. Among their activities have been the regular club meetings, the state convention in Wichita on March 22, and the Roman Banquet held in the little theater on April 14. Roma Case was president of the club and Carol Lathrop held the office of vice-president. Johanna Stueckemann took care of the club's business and money. Richard Traugott was the reporter. This proposition was the subject of debates by the EHS debate teams this year as they appeared in tournaments throughout Kansas. One of the highlights of the season was the debate tournament held at Ellinwood on January 18 in which fifty teams participated. The council is composed of ten students elected from the four classes to be their representatives. The Ellinwood Association for Teenagers is a recreation club organized in 1955. The members elected a student board to take care of the problems and run the Eagles Nest. Dr. Schadt spon- sored both the EAT board and the student council. EAT Board: Jim Riedel, Karen Fox, Mary Ann Lebbin, Dick Eberhart, Imogene Meadows, Doug Schneider, Marilyn Pohlman, Jacque Scharts, Tom Schroeder and Kieth Lebbin. Dancing at the Eagles Nest Dancing to music by Stafford Band Pnam Jeatunea Jnopicana The seniors were entertained in royal fashion by the juniors at the annual banquet and prom which was held May 3. The theme Tropicana was carried out with a painted scene and various other attractive decorations. After a delicious meal, prepared by the junior's mothers, everyone enjoyed an evening of dancing. Music and entertainment was provided by the boys quartet, Sandy Robinson, the Stafford Dance Band and a knife dance cleverly performed by Dennis Casey and Roger French. King Tom Schroeder and Queen Linda Hayes were crowned by Dick Traugott, Junior Class President. Attendants for the royalty were Judy Lebbin, Imogene Meadows, Art Traugott and Steve Kimple. Prom royalty: Kimple, Meadows, Hayes Schroeder, Lebbin and Traugott °Phomore waiter feast t Students enjoy banquet Native dance by French and Casey Girls' Chorus Boys' Glee Club Vocal Qnoupa £njoq Sinqinq The Monday-Wednesday Girls Glee Club, under the direction of Paula Hamm, received a I at the district music festival. The Boys Glee Club, under the direction of Eldon Hamm, re- ceived a II at the district music festival. The Girls Chorus, who met on Tuesdays and Thursdays, was directed by Paula Hamm. YYlulic Onqanifation Rate Hiqh in Unteneat and Achievement The EHS Mixed Chorus, this year, was again directed by Mr. Banman. This group met in the Vocal Music Room on Tuesdays and Thursdays. At the District Festival they were one of the EUinwood entries that re- ceived a I rating. The Mixed Vocal Ensemble of '58 was a very active group. Composed of 15 members and their accompan- iest, they took a I at District Fes- tival and a II at State. They also performed for various civic organi- zations. This group is directed by Mr. Banman. This year's Boys Ensemble was made up of 13 members, their ac- companiest, and their director, Mr. Hamm. This group received a 11 at the District Festival. YMxed Chonun BOYS ENSEMBLE VOCAL ENSEMBLE Mr. Banman directing ELLINWOOD HIGH SCHOOL BAND Unitnumental QnoupaPlay fjon This year's EHS band, composed of 66 members, had a very active season. They spent their Band Day at K. U. , and then later on they attended a band clinic at Lindsborg. They, also, received a I at district music festival. Leading the marching band this year were Connie Warren, drum majorette, with twirlers Carmen Graff, Sandy Robinson, Roberta Stevens, Marilyn Pohlman, and Mickie Brenn. Dance Band during '57-58 was similar to past years. The group played several times at the Eagles's Nest , and they exchanged dances with Stafford for the prom. The Pep Band, composed of those members who don't participate in athletics, played at all football and basketball games during the year. The Dixieland Band performed several times this year. Most of these were for civic organizations and church groups. 26 Twirlers: Warren, Pohlman, Robinson Dixieland combo played jazz. 27 Stevens, Graff and Brenn Kuiwytopks The newly formed pep club was led by Jolene Yarmer, President, and sponsored by Mr. Samples and Mr. Hogg. RocketteA. Onqani e to Booat CHS Ueama The cheerleaders and supporters of the EHS Eagles played a large part in the success of the athletic teams. The support of the teams this year has been the finest. The five trophies that the teams won this year are proof of the tremendous support EHS teams have had. The baseball team won the Dodge City baseball tournament this year. No trophies were awarded, however. The basketball teams won three trophies. The Eagle cagers were Co-Champions in the league. The basketball team also won two trophies for second place in the Regional and District tournaments. They won third in the Nickerson Invitational Tournament. They have scored 21 wins, 4 losses and I tie since Myron Rodee took over as head coach in 1955. The frosh lost to Claflin 2-0. Four of the freshman boys were promoted to the varsity during the season--Bill Sanford, John Helfrich, Keith Lebbin and Dennis Martens The freshman basketball team won two and lost five. The frosh team won their contests with Ellsworth and St. John. The starting five were Bill Sanford, Keith Lebbin, Dennis Martens, John Helfrich and Jim Spry. Coach Perikli Freshman basketball team: Casey, Lebbin, Martens, Langrehr, Myer, Helfrich, Jordan, Sanford, Oberle, Pivonka, Spry. 33 Co-cham ib ofc CP £ win 17, lobe. 6 The Ellinwood Rural High Eagles Varsity Squad ended the 1957-58 basketball season with a 17 win and a 6 loss record. The Eagles were Co-Champs of the Central Prairie League. It was a come-from-behind season for the Eagles against great odds. The Eagles won their last four league games of the regular season to tie Sterling for the CPL crown. The Eagles took part in an official's clinic game with Pratt on their home floor. The team went on to the district tournament at Ellsworth and took second. The Eagles also took second place in the regionals at Hays, being deprived of a trip to the state tourna- ment by a powerful Russell Quintet. Stnonq on Team Plaif The first ten of Coach Robins' basketball charges went a long way during the 1957-58 season. Arnie Link was selected to the Class A All-State Team. Arnie was not only a fine shooter, but also a fine rebounder. His deadly accuracy at the free throw line kept the Eagles in many a game. Captain Dick Jenisch provided the leadership and poise that the team needed. His fine outside shooting and ball handling proved to be invaluable to the squad. Larry Manning stepped into a starting role this year and provided a solid part of the scoring punch. His fine outside shooting punctured many an opposing defense. Bill Hallmark was a fine playmaker who came on midway in the season and helped lift the Eagles to the league championship. Bob Hopkins was a key man under the boards. His rebounding helped make up for the lack of height on the squad. Dick Traugott, Fred Cottrell, Tom Schroeder, Larry Moos and Dave Fry provided the reserve punch that a championship team needs. The Ellinwood team won their first game in the Regional Tournament. The boys lost out in their second game, however. The squad attended five relays. These included Sterling, Emporia, Hoisington, Larned and Kinsley. The squad also took part in the CPL Meet and participated in two dual meets with Pratt and Stafford. Gary Drake was elected team captain of the squad. Four man team: Lebbin, Goodspeed, Isern and Schroeder. Seven out (on Qo(( Seven boys made up the 1958 golf team. They were Jim Roth, Larry Manning, Tom Schroeder, Bill San- ford, Dennis Lebbin, Mike Good- speed and Ed Isern. The team won four dual meets with Pratt, Great Bend, Lyons and Larned. The team also attended the Hutchinson Invi- tational Golf Tournament. Two Man team: Manning and Roth chroeder returns one Shont Schedule i Jennio. The EHS Tennis Team played only one match besides the Central Prairie League Meet at Ellsworth. The team was made up of four seniors, Dick Eberhart, Duane Wilcox, Steve Kimple and Tom Schroeder; two juniors, Louis Wilson and Larry Manning; and one freshman, James Spry. Marvin Schadt, is respected by students, faculty and parents for his sound judgment and his concern for the educational welfare of the community. The Board of Education of Ellinwood Rural High School is made up of a group of capable men devoted to their job. These men are Mr. Nick Klepper, Mr. Fred Muller, Mr. Robert Warren, Mr. Harvey DeWerff and Mr. Stanley Kimple.
