THIS YEAR’S COVER Pictured on the cover of the 1957 Eagle are Seniors Richard Carlson, Norman Werner, and Phyllis Frick. Richard was named valedictorian of the Senior Class during a special awards assembly on May 16, and Phyllis was awarded the medal for s a 1 ut at o r i an . Norman, along with Richard and Phyllis, was selected as a member of this year's National Honor Society. We are proud of these students. Their outstanding scholar- ship achievements have been a credit to our high school. Many other students in various other departments have helped to give Ellinwood High School the fine reputation that it so rightly deserves. The trophies pictured above represent a year of cooperation, determination, and teamwork on the part of o u r . at h I e t e s . For the first time in the history of E. H. S., the Eagles won league championships in both football and bas- ketball. In addition, the basketball team placed second in the state tournament finals at Hutchinson. And in other depart- ments---debate, home economics, vocational agriculture, music, commerce----we have shown that we can excel. But regardless of medals and trophies, we realize that our school is only as good as the students it produces. Scholarship, then, should be recognized as our most important product. Initiation was held on Monday, September 17, with the highlight of the day being the court held at the bandshell. Richard Carlson, with the help of a blood-thirsty Senior Class, acted as emcee. Special features included exciting contests in the departments of worm-eating, string-swallowing, egg-throwing, potato-racing, and water -pouring. Senioni Reme 4. Those sophomore Olympic champs! At the end of this year's football season the Ellinwood Eagles were ranked tenth in the state by the Associated Press. During the season the Eagles set a record which will be hard to top when they scored at least one touchdown in every quarter of every game. Ellinwood was also the highest scoring team in the state with 342 points, allowing the rival teams a total of only 38 points. One of the most successful basketball seasons in the history of Ellinwood High School came to a close on Saturday eve- ninS March 16, when the Eagles were nosed out of the state championship by a strong Clay Center team. Prior to that game, the Eagles overpowered a series of tough opponents in district and region- al competition. At Ellinwood, the Blue and White hoopsters clipped Sterling and Lyons to earn a trip to the regional tour- ney at Larned. Slipping past Leoti 45-42 Eagles again faced Lyons, this time beating them 58-47. In state competition the Robinsmen downed Marysville 56-43, routed Girard 71-47, and went on to win second place in the tourney. Bob Veach and Arnie Link were placed on the all- tournament first team, and Jim Schartz earned a berth on the second team. The Eagles ended the season with a 19-6 rec- ord. The B team went undefeated. State Uounnament: Second Place ARNIE LINK ROBERT VEACH First row, left to right: Richard Jenisch, Richard Carlson, Robert Veach, Arhie Link, Jim Schartz.
