ELUNWOOD BAKERY 27 noynLiy CROWDED Corrine Robl and Franklin Doll were crowned king and queen at the Valentine party sponsored by the Student Coun- cil Tuesday night, February 14. Dancing, cards and ping pong were enjoyed by the stu- dent body throughout the evening. Nominations were made by the student council early in the week and voting was held Tues- day afternoon with all students participating, but the winners were not announced until the coronation at 9 o’clock. SEOIOR Plfly R SUCCESS The senior play Demon in the dark given November 15, proved to be a well directed and highly entertaining produc - tion. Its mystery plot held the audience spell bound both with laughter and intrigue. The play was a financial success. Gate receipts totaled $250. Less expenses and tax the net profit should total a little less than $200. JUHI0RS ORDER RIR6S The junior class selected their rings Wednesday in a class meeting. They voted on 3 different kinds, chosen by a committee from the class. On the first ballot the decision was unanimous. The rings were ordered from Josten, as were last years. Members of the class had their measurements taken and made their deposits within the next two days in order that the rings may be received before Christmas. EDITORS ELECTED The editors of the school paper and annual were elected by the journalism class by popular vote. John Hatcher was selected editor of the paper and Pete Wilson, assistant Editor. Richard Moos was named ed- itor of the year book. In February the engage- ment of Miss Betty Soukup and Mr. Warren Rader and the en- gagement of Miss Mary Fran- ces Poppelreiter to Mr. Robert Arnsdorf were announced. OPERETTA TO BE CIVEU The Musical comedy, Gyp- sy Rover, will be presented by the glee clubs next Tuesday.' The operetta is built a- round the character Rob, who is stolen in,infancy by his nurse who later married a gypsy. The child grew to manhood be- lieving the gypsies to be his parents. Complications develop whena ladyfrom court and her fiance are lost in the forest. You will want to know what happens when the Gypsy Rob falls in love with the Lady Con- stance. The costumes are colorful; the music is gay, and the act- ing is superb. SEOIORS TO TRUE TRIP Approximately 45 seniors expect to make the yearly sen- ior trip. This year they will leave April 21 and return April 25. Points they will visit are Tulsa, Okla. City, Okla. Shreveport La.; Dallas and Ft. The Student Council, consisting of twelve members—four seniors, three juniors, two sophomores and one freshman--is selected by each class at the first of the year. During the year the Student Council has sponsored four dances--Christ- mas, Valentine, St. Patrick and one other all school dance. This organization started the idea of using guest cards for the all school parties. The council chooses the lyceum programs for the year. Under the direction of Miss Mallory, the Thespian Club held meetings through- out the year to discuss and learn different phases of stage management and makeup. At Thanksgiving they presented the one act play “Thanksgiving For Freida to the student body. The officers for the ’49-’50 term were: Donna DeBusk, Mary Ann Arbuthnot, Tommy Daniels, and William Ernsting. In order to obtain membership in the club, one must have earned 10 points by act- ing in a play, helping stage management, make-up, or other things pertaining to dramatics. They won 9 out of 1 0 league games to win the first league championship in the history of Ellinwood High School. The Eagles added 3 trophies to the trophy case this season—one first, one second, and one third place. The Eagles will lose 8 of their championship team by graduation this spring--the first five and three other boys who saw a lot of action. Although Coach Conley will have a rebuilding job ahead of him he has several prom- ising sophomores and juniors returning for the next cage season. Maneuvering a fast backfield behind a light and fast charging line, the Eagles af- ter a slow start had a very good season. The Eagles dropped their first two games while they were learning a new offense. They bounced back to win seven in a row before being defeated by a big, hard charging Minneapolis team. The season’s opening game was dropped to St. John 19 to 6. The first league op- ponent, Hoisington, defeated the Eagles 18 to 12. The Eagles won seven straight: Ster- ling 20 to 0, Ellsworth 25 to 0, Lyons 6 to 0, Chase 20 to 0, Jetmore 21 to 6, Linds- berg 26 to 6, Claflin 26 to 7, and then lost a heartbreaker to Minneapolis 13 to 20.
