1. a school staff of young, enthusiastic teachers, interested in the school and ready to go places. 2. a new building offering opportunities for 1 functional program. . a fine library with further possibilities. .excellent beginnings in activities and guidance. 5 4 These recommendations were made! 1. a more adequate program of professional supervision. 2. increased attention to providing an enriched, functional curriculum in terms of a part-time librarian and courses in art and physical education. In 1945, our public school system changed from a seven-four plan to a six-three-three plan. The Junior High School, seventh, eighth, and nineth grades moved in with the Senior High School, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades. Again it was necessary to consider over crowded conditions and to look forward to the day when the present school would be just junior High School. In 1952, under Mt. jones' leadership, we would like to stress the fact that all recom- mendations made by the Evaluating Committees have been carried out and further goals have been reached. It is with deep regret that after fifty years of public service, we see the illustrious name of Ellicott City High School fade into the past, but with this knowledge that the graduates of this school for years to come will keep before the world the ideals that were formulated in this memorable institution. Koontz 1949-1952 Omar J. jones In July 1902, the Howard County School Board decided to establish in the Ellicott City Elementary School on School Street a high school. Before this time, high school textbooks were available to most of the elementary schools of the county, and elementary graduates often returned to obtain from the elementary teachers whatever higher educa- tion they could offer. The very first high school was located at the end of School 'Street in Ellicott City. In 1908, the Commercial Department was added to the school. In 1913, it became an approved first group high school. By 1920, the school building could no longer house advantageously the increase in school attendants, and the site of Rock Hill College was purchased in 1923. Before the actual plans for the new high school were made, there was much controversy as to whether or not the plans for building the new high school were too pretentious, however, after a few months of discussion the County Commissioners kept after the county to purchase a site at Ellicott City for the erection and equipment of the school on said site. The Ellicott City Times supported the people in their desire for the new and much needed high school. Campaign buttons were distributed among the people who proudly displayed them as proof of their desire for the new school. Finally, on November 18, 1924, the actual laying of the cornerstone under the auspices of Patmos Lodge No. 70, A. F. 8: A. M. took place. Students of the old school, led by the Mt. Airy Band, paraded through the town to the new site. Preceding the ceremony of laying the cornerstone, the student body of the old school together with many visitors attended exercises held in the auditorium. Patriotic songs were sung by the school children and addresses were made by Mr. Albert Cook, State Superintendent of Education and Mr. Woodland C. Phillips, Superintendent of Howard County Schools, who acted as chairman. During the years that the Messrs.' Brown, Frank and Yingling had been principals, the school had advanced so as to- become a necessary part' 'of the community life, both intellectually and socially. Our curriculum had been rounded out to fit both those who desired further scholastic work and those who went into the business field immediately. Through these years, our alumni and friends have seen vast improvement in school spirit and increasing interest in the library, a great change in the school grounds and property, also the long desired accommodations for the gymnasium. In 1939, the new high school building on Montgomery Road was completed. On February twentieth and twenty-first 1940, the school was evaluated through the medium of the Cooperative Study of Secondary School Standards. These commendations were offered:
