Mrs. Leota McNeely immediately started us on our ABC's and our crude method of printing. Going on to the second grade, we found Mrs. Dinwiddie our teacher. Here we learned the mys- teries of writing and telling time. After a pleasant year we passed on to Mrs. Beatrice Tapp, who very patiently pulled us through what to us were complicated math roblems--division and mul- tiplication, we also struggled through a new subject named geography. The next year in Mrs. Gledith Baynes' room we discovered a hidden musical talent through the rhythm band. There we also used ink for the first time. ln the fifth grade Mrs. Maxine Sampson taught us the fundamentals pf pjresenting a book report. And in the sixth grade Mrs. Frances Deckard prepared us for junior IQ . Next we found ourselves in junior high, wandering through the halls like lost sheep. Mr. Willis, our sponsor, helped us elect officers and supervised our parties. Mr. Ashel Hawkins was our eighth grade sponsor. The highlight of the freshman year was the Freshman Banquet which had an Hawaiian theme. The initiation was a big event too. Death took our sponsor, Miss Mildred Reeves, and Miss Frances Harding and Mrs. Beatrice Overstreet willingly took her place. As sophomores we enjoyed getting revenge on the in-coming freshmen. Mrs. Overstreet again greeted us as sponsor in the junior year and Mrs. Viola Ramsey was the assistant. They worked with us planning the prom and raising funds for the senior trip. We pre- sented our first play, Rich for a Day, in the second semester. Mr. Paul Schurtter guided us through the senior year and helped us with another play, Betty Jane from Punkin Lane. We worked hard with bake sales, scrap drives, and chili suppers to raise mone for the senior trip. At last graduation night arrived, and our class was on the top rung of the ladcfer, yet really on the bottom rung as we faced the future. X , 5 MATTHEWS BROTHERS COMPANY i f T Ill l 'B
