CLASS HISTORY Tram up a chtld 1n the way he should go and when he IS old he w1ll not depart from 1t When the class of 1956 f1rst arrrved at Ellet H1gh school they Came as chxldren and were taught so that they learned to grow and most have not de parted from th1s good trarnlng Therefore 1t can be sard that the semor class of 1956 can look back gratefully upon a happy and successful hlstory There rs a great d1f1erence between the seniors as they are now confrdent adm1red and those who s1x years ago could hardly hnd the1r way from class to class So lets go back 1n tlme to the year 1950 when one hundred and n1netyf1ve seventh graders entered Ellet l'11gh School for the f1rst t1me and so became the f1rst class to go through the full s1x years of school 1n the new Ellet Bu11d1ng Many students proved themselves to be outstandmg from the very begrnnrng and have remalned so ever srnce Those elected 1nto Student Counc1l were Marsha Dav1s Martha Hyre Robert Br1tta1n and lames Breznak Red Cross Representatlves were Su zanne Layne Betty Parman Mary Lou Dove Nova WGlk1nS Carole Edwards Ed 1-ltssam and Carl Edwards Many of the boys were 1nterested IH sports Roddy DeWalt made the Iun1or Hlgh Football Team The Iun1or Hlgh Basketball Team was very successful but 1t was later that the members of th1s class really got a chance to shlne 1n the f1e1d of sports Claudra Math1as was the seventh grade attendant to the May Court She also made the Srngers along w1th Dorothy Carney There must have been a great deal of musrcal talent 1n th1s class because several new mus1cal organrzattons were started for them Der W1ener schn1tzles or better known as the German Band was one of these groups Made up entlrely of seventh R1chard Holloman manager C1aud1a Math1as stnger along wlth Larry Mart1n R1chard Underwood B111 Webster Clyde Corley and Tom Gearhart Th1s popular group lasted for four years and meanwhrle added some new members They were Harold Sal1s bury and Martlyn St1llwell Members of the Reserve Band were B111 Webster Clyde Corley Martha Hyre and Geoffrey H111 Regu lar band members mcluded Ted Yengl1ng R1chard Underwood Arthur Yengl1ng Larry Mart1n Mar1lyn St1l1well Nancy Orcutt Claud1a Math1as Chr1st1na Crum Ed H1ssam and Harold Sal1sbury A few of these people have Cfedll for be1ng IH the band for the1r full SIX years at Ellet Seventh grade members of the orchestra were R1chard Holloman Harold Sallsbury Larry Mart1n Claudla Math1as Nancy Or cutt Mar1lyn St1llwell Betty Lou Parman Marran Adey and Martha Hyre After these newcomers were rel1eved of be1ng c1ass1f1ed as the youngest class 1n the school they set out to prove themselves even better Daun Bonner Claudla Math1as Robert Br1tta1n and Robert Srbley were elected to Student Counc1l The new Red Cross representat1ves were Nancy Edwards Marsha Dav1s Nova Watkrns IoAnn Roman Robert S1bley and Larry Mart1n The e1ghth grade attendant to the Homecomrng Court was loAnn Roman and to the May Court Betty Lou Parman Iames T1pton Robert Putman and Roddy DeWalt made the Iun1or Hrgh Football Team Kenneth Dun lap Robert Putman Roddy DeWalt and Davrd Bur ton part1c1pated ln the Iun1or H1gh Basketball Team A Boys Quartet made up of e1ghth graders was begun It f1rst 1ncluded Larry Mart1n, Ed Hlssam and Geoffrey H111 Thts group has been IH ex1stence for frve years Members have been added or subtracted and have mcluded Larry Kelly R1chard Holloman lack Lee and accompan1st Suzanne Layne Two more g1rls from th1s class were added to the Smgers wh1le rn the e1ghth grade They were Betty Lou Parman and Suzanne Layne Robert Br1tta1n par tlclpated 1n the boys s1ng1ng group the Choralrers Vartous honors were bestowed upon some of the members of the class Rochelle Hartz was elected the Grade School All C1ty Y Teen Pres1dent and Robert Br1tta1n rece1ved the Boyhood Award at the end of the school year September 1952 dawned upon an older group of students called freshmen They were now perm1tted to part1c1pate 1n many more GCl1V1l1eS and d1d so wlllxngly w1th surpr1s1ng success Two g1rls became Re erve cheerleaders They were Betty Lou Parman and loyce W1lson Some of the1r own classmates they cheered for were Kenneth Dun lap Robert Putman who were members of the Re serve Basketball Team Eleven boys made the Freshman basketball team Some of them 1ncluaed lames T1pton Kerth Watson Davrd Burton Tom Gearhart Laddy Kmght Iohn Le Master B111 Sn1vely Robert 1'1e1ght Robert Putman Kenneth Dunlap The Freshman football team was also an lmportant act1v1ty for the boys However the g1rls were not to be outdone as far as sports were concerned Seven freshmen made the grrls Y Teen basketball team Chr1st1na Crum SONIC Hamxlton Suzanne Layne Marsha Dav1s and Nancy Orcutt were some of the f1rst members Most of these glrls part1c1pated 1n YTeen Basketball for the next four years Others who 1o1ned 1n were ludy lohnson Barbara Halt Betty DGVIS Cheryl Carpenter Claud1a Math1as Mardella Montgomery Ruth Boggs and lan Evans N1nth Graders elected to Student Counc1l were Robert Br1tta1n Those chosen to represent Iun1or Red Cross were Nova Watklns Geoffrey H111 and I1m T1pton Ioyce W1lson had the honor of be1ng elected Home comrng attendant Marsha DGVIS was the Freshman attendant to the Basketball Court The best s1ngers of the freshman class were selected and these f1fty four students made up the Iun1or Cho1r Two more g1rls were added to the S1ngers group They were M1ldred Fraz1er and loyce W1lson There were twenty mne freshmen who were band members Nmeteen played 1n the orchestra also Be S1deS hav1ng so many members 1D these mstrumental groups two more new organrzatlons were formed The Mellotones a mus1cal group cons1st1ng of eleven stu dents 1ncluded several freshmen They were R1chard Underwood Harold Salrsbury Robert S1bley B111 Webster and Ted Yengl1ng A later add1t1on was Cheryl Carpenter The second newly formed group was the Belltones Of these SIX g1rls four were freshmen They were lane W1ldrnan Rochelle Hartz Charlotte Kyker and Marlorle Lutes The n1rth grade class was also proud to have Mar 1or1e Showalter as a regular ma1orette Several members of th1s class rece1ved letters and awards at the recogr11t1on assembly near the end of the1r freshman year They had done well and now the1r yuntor h1gh school days were over Now ln the upper half of the h1gh school the sopho mores turned the1r attentlon to more new and outstand mg GCl1V1l19S Sxx boys were elected to H1 Y They were Robert S1bley lack Lee Larry Kelley lames T1pton Robert , . . , I .
