When the fall term of school resumes itself and the various activities are well under way the Senior looks forward with much anticipation to the coming of the Senior play Tryouts are in order and the chosen cast starts rehearsals with a great spirit which we hope is going to last Fortunately it did and the cast shown in the picture put on a performance that surprised even the prompter whose beautiful diction had an astonishing affect on the audience ln the play Lady of Letters Adelaide played by Kathryn Rode is a naive wife of Gilbert Willifer played by Denman Raymond who is professor in a small college town in the South She feels herself neglected and shut out from college society and the learned pursuits of her husband She buys the manuscript of a novel f f l h rom an unsuccess u aut or played by William Hart She then sends it to a publisher under her own name and before she realizes it the book is published and becomes a best seller Fnghtened at the possible consequence Adelaide resolves to keep it a secret and becomes the chief object of interest Her lightest word is interpreted as an utterance of genius and her fame raises the obscure little school to national prominence although her own family contmues to remain skeptical The publishers representative played by Maurice Rosenstock exploits her for his own purpose while Adelaide accepts fame interviews and celebrations with childlike Joy Just as the college has inwented a new degree for her Lady of Letters the inevitable exposure comes from a jealous wo l d b N man paye y orma Stern who had previously known the real author In the resulting confusion the col saves her Adelaide promises to buy no more books and is reconciled with her husband who realizes that much of the trouble has been caused by his own lack of sympathy and attention Dorothy TerBush Lilliam Schleifer Helen Hoar May Zipperman and Loretta Turner are the remaining characters in the Senior play Lady of Letters After functioning successfully for a number of years the Shawangunk Little Theatre thanks its advisor Miss Torrens for its successful function this year This organization affords to those students interested in dta matics an opportunity to show their ability in acting and doing backstage work it mcreases one s knowledge of the stage and provides entertainment for its audiences Besides puttmg on the Little Theatre Frolic which mqludqd the Duso plays shown on the following page the Little Theatre members have also presented The Congo by Vachel Lindsey and Bells by Edgar Allan Poe in an assembly program and later a Variety Show These presentations were done as choral reading and we e greatly appreciated by the audiences Hitler may plun der Europe businesses may suffer bankruptcy and people may commit suicide but dramatics will live on For this reason let us hope that the Little Theatre will continue to thrive m Ellenvrlle High School and as future Thespians its members will remember the proverb Act well your part for there all the h0Il01' ll0S 4 Y 41 Y H 3 I l ' lege authorities, played by Irving Levine and Oral Bilderback, turn against Adelaide, but her very innocence
