ZZ X Z JK ,fff L..-5 gm FFT E HISTORY OF ELLENSBURG HIGH SCHOOL The good shlp has tossed and turned upon the seas for many years lyer nearer lts goal the craft has come guided by the unerrxng hands of plots always on the lookout for the best route and manned by faithful r ews whose duty was gxvln thelr best for the shlp ln such a way might he chromcler of history set down the story of the Ellensburg Hlgh School Forty years ago the cltlzens of Fllensbur appropriated 540 000 for the constructlon of the old Central or Vlashm ton School The bulldlng occupled the block where the present Washington School stands A feature of the structure was the tower contamlng the clty clock by which the people of that day tlmed therr actrons The entire public school system of Ellensburg was housed ln the bulldlng the flrst year and m addltlon the Normal School occupied one floor from I89l to IS93 The hlgh school was orgamzed ln l893 The second floor of Central School was then devoted to the business of hlgh school mstructlon A two year course was first offered Apparently all the puplls were flrst year students for there IS no record of graduation before l895 when four completed the mastery of Algebra, Physiology, Bookkeepmg, Latln, English, General History, Geometry, Rhetoric, Civics, Botany, Muslc and Arlthmetlc The school's first prlnclpal, F Nl Mccully, served from l890 to I90l The fact that he remained wlth the mstltutlon for eleven years mdlcates that 8 , -f ,T V X ' N- 7-,M vf s A 1 X X Xxx , ,inn I I S X , X X 1 U . , . .
