It ' s a silver-plated megaphone dangling from a dainty chain. It ' s meet¬ ing friends, watching the winning basket and experi¬ encing the thrill and sweat of a locker room after the struggle. High school ... is cramming for an exam that you ' d rather forget. It ' s a shiny gold ting in your Jun¬ ior year and a charm bracelet with scattered memories. Highlights of the season were a 6-0 Homecoming victory over Oakes and the first non-conference win in 6 years, 18-8 over Leola. Chosen to the All-Confer¬ ence team were Seniors Jim Kaiser, a repeat from the previous year, and Darryl Nitschke. In a hard-fought game, the Cards defeated Oakes 6-0. Coronation was held at halftime of the football game on Friday night. Senior candidate, Cheryl Markhart was crowned queen. Princesses were Jennifer Steinwand, 8th grade candidate; Pam Schock, Sophomore candidate; Julie Kirkeby, Junior candidate and Vicki Iverson, Freshman candidate. Co-Captains were Jennifer Steinwand and Carla Diede. Diane Radtke and Jennifer Steinwand scored 21 points each against Fullerton to set a team scoring record. The girls placed third in the LaMoure Invi¬ tational Tourney. All members gained playing experience to give the team a bright outlook for future years. Sandy Hokana received the most valuable player award. 1976 Redbird [High School Annual, Ellendale North Dakota] WREOUN fl J7ERECr The Wrestlers had a dual meet of 6-4-1. They placed 4th in Conference and 3rd in Regionals. All weight classes were filled with strength being in the higher weight classes. Voted Most Valuable Wres¬ tler was Brent Nell and the Most Dedicated Wrestler was Roger Zimmerman. The Most Improved Wres¬ tler was Dick Randall. The wrestlers appreciated the support of the student body throughout the season. 1. Brent Nell rides his opponei. 2. The Cards finished their season 13-9. They placed 3rd in District and finished 5th in Conference. Co- Captains were Todd Ost and Mike Ketterling. Todd Ost scored a career high of 47 points against Kulm and was named to the Southeast A11-Conference team. 1. The freshman boys placed 2nd in the Oakes Invitational Tour¬ ney. TWO UTLB QRrOPOTFOf TRACfC The track team qualified 5 boys for the Stale Track Meet. Brent Houghton in the two mile and the iwo- mile relay team which consisted of Ray Akers, Bryan Widmer, Eric Bem- hagen and Todd Stein- wand. Track co-captains were Kevin Mangin, and Brent Houghton. Lori Tiegs running the 100 yd. dash. 1976 Rb The girls ' track team coached by Jim Johnson, placed third in conference. Renee Hatfield qualified for the State Track Meet in the shotput and Diane Radtke in the 100 yd. dash and the 110 yd. hurdles. Renee went on to place third in State. Track co¬ captains were Diane Radtke and Sherry Diede. The 7th grade girls placed 1st in Conference. The team possesses a bright promise for the future. f CUUYFRUSTRAlED A(S N For the third year in a row, the All-Stars defeated the Faculty, 55-46. Hokies Heroes took the league crown. The Red Rodents broke the century mark by defeating the Zipper Heads, 105-52. Brent Nell was the leading scorer, and Dar¬ ryl Lematta was the leading rebounder. (90U=T C0MP£mQlNFIlBM££rS This year ' s team had an increase in meets. They finished first at Ashley with Bryan Stepa- nek shooting a one under par 33. In the Conference meet, they finished sixth. Their attendants were, Julie Kirkeby and Jeff Heitman, Sharlene Linder and David Betting, JoAnn Mastel and Jeff Man- gin. The Student Council worked Friday and Saturday decorating for the dance. Winter Carnival was the theme with music provided by Bitterwood. DRAMA DEPARjJ(A£Nr The Drama class produced a Halloween play for the ele¬ mentary students under the direction of Mr. David Horst- mann. The play was titled Annabelle Broom, the Unhappy Witch. Members of the cast were: Dennis Ketter- ling, Janell Zahn, Renee Hatfield, Julie Kirkeby, Vicki Iverson, Cheryl Markhart, Diane Radtke, and Jennifer Steinwand. Early Frost and Trouble in the Works were presented to the pub¬ lic on May 10 and 11. We would like to thank Mrs. Coleman, Miss Schulz, Mr. Shilman, and Mr. Bruce for their assistance. The staff felt a change in the type of book was neces¬ sary . We sincerely hope you enjoy the 1976 Red- bird. The Cardinal staff, under the guidance of Miss Schulz, produced a monthly paper. This kept the students informed on the current events in EHS. NBA ID FOZ, OOUNOL INCVSlRUiL ARTSf This year the council conceniraied their efforts on student rights. They sponsored the Homecoming and Sno-Ball dances. Six members of the council attended the State Convention in Grand Forks. In June, David Betting and Todd Steinwand attended the national convention in Ore¬ gon. The Industrial Arts Fair was held on May 6. The award winners were: Gary Hokana, 8th grade Woodworking; Russ Zinter and Don King, 9th grade Machine Tools; Robin Bobzien, 10th grade Machine Tools; Brad Dobler, Architec¬ tural Drafting; Bryan Stepanek, Advanced Woods; Robin Fehr and Cindy Hokana, Upholstery. 5. The Girls’ Chorus received a star rat¬ ing at Districts. The following students advanced to the State Music Festival in Bismarck: Diane Radtke, Jennifer Stein- wand , Deb Wilson, Susanne lilies, Julie Kirkeby, Wendi Durheim, Tim Steinwand, Linda Cayman, JoAnn Mastel, Kari Dobler, Connie Fuchs, Dixie Snyder, AnnGebhardt, Twila Bulkley, Laurie Bobbe, and Renee Hatfield. 39 ••£ aWADfi ($IRLS W SPO JQORS cmJCE This year’s E-Club was open to girls for the first time. The E-Club sold concessions, bumper stickers, and shirts to raise money. The final payment for the football scoreboard was made. The FHA was very active this year. They attended the District rally in Edge- ley and hosted the E-Club at sports night. Other events included a babysit¬ ting night and a Sadies Hawkins dance. They ended the year with a pic¬ nic supper. so aUD£NlC 70 UR lA ACNIN(Sr 0 N D.C On March 24, 30 stu¬ dents consisting of Juniors and Seniors, and 2 faculty members, flew to Wash¬ ington D. C. They toured Mt. Vernon, the Smithso¬ nian Institute, the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials, and the Washington Monu¬ ment . They also visited Arlington Cemetery, the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Ans, and the Bureau of Printing and Engraving. The group flew back to North Dakota on March 26. Memories was the theme: yellow, orange and green the colors. The scene was an old fashioned park. A bandstand was in one corner where Goldust provided music for the evening. A garden on the stage was filled with plants and hedges. In the other corner was a water fountain. The Juniors hosted the Seniors at a banquet before the dance. yl n 1 H ' H w ' ' 1 i 1. Student addresses were given by Jennifer Steinwand and Brent Houghton. Luther Bjerke, from UNO, was the commencement speaker for the evening. The Sen¬ iors chose red, white, and blue as their colors. The days were filled with football and girls ' basketball games, pep rallies, Homecoming and ACT tests. Then came snow and cold but there were many activities to keep everyone busy, basketball games, wrestling matches, sock hops, Sno-Ball, class meetings and intramural. Spring arrived bringing track and golf meets, music contest. Prom and banquet, awards night, skip day. Baccalaureate and the long awaited graduation. It was the end of our yesterdays and the beginning of our many tomorrows.
